From Amazon.co.uk

Stupid White Men, Michael Moore's screed against "Thief-in-Chief" George Bush's power elite, hit No. 1 at Amazon.com within days of publication. Why? It's as fulminating and crammed with infuriating facts as any right-wing bestseller, as irreverent as The Onion, and as noisily entertaining as a wrestling smackdown. Moore offers a more interesting critique of the 2000 election than Ralph Nader's Crashing the Party (he argued with Nader, his old boss, who sacked him), and he's serious when he advocates ousting Bush. But Moore's rage is outrageous, couched in shameless gags and madcap comedy: "Old white men wielding martinis and wearing dickies have occupied our nation's capital.... Launch the SCUD missiles! Bring us the head of Antonin Scalia!... We are no longer [able] to hold free and fair elections. We need U.N. observers, U.N. troops". Moore's ideas range from on-the-money (Arafat should beat Sharon with Gandhi's non-violent shame tactics) to over-the-top: blacks should put inflatable white dolls in their cars so racist cops will think they're chauffeurs; the ever-more-Republicanesque Democratic Party should be sued for fraud; "no contributions toward advancing our civilization ever came out of the South [except Faulkner, Hellman, and R.J. Reynolds]," because it's too hot to think straight there; Korean dictator Kim Jong-il "has got to broaden himself beyond porn and John Wayne" by watching better movies, like Dude, Where's My Car? (which contains "all you need to know about America"). Whatever your politics, Stupid White Men should make you blow your stack.--Tim Appelo

Meet, if you haven't already, one of America's best-known professional gadflies, Michael Moore. Moore's been mad as hell and publicly refusing to take it anymore ever since he first leveled a movie camera at the chairman of General Motors, Roger Smith. Moore, whose hometown is Flint, Michigan, tracked Smith down to ask him how he could turn Flint into "a ghost town" by closing a factory and terminating thousands of jobs. The resulting documentary film, Roger and Me (1989), became "the largest-grossing nonfiction film of all time" and freed Moore creatively.
Three more films followed: Pets or Meat, The Return to Flint (1992), Canadian Bacon, with John Candy and Alan Alda (1995), and The Big One (1998). (A fourth film, Bowling for Columbine, is in production.) Moore is also creator and host of the television series TV Nation, which won an Emmy Award in 1994, and of the Emmy-nominated The Awful Truth. His books include Downsize This: Random Threats from an Unarmed American (1997), which tackles the Nike Corporation over its use of child labor in Indonesia; Adventures in a TV Nation (1998; coauthored with Kathleen Glynn), and now the wild and crazy-like-a-fox Stupid White Men with its juicy subtitle: "...and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation!"
Passionate, outraged, straight-shooting and witty, Moore's voice in Stupid White Men is the shout from across the border that many Canadians have been longing to hear. This is a Yank who genuinely wants a decent life for ordinary people, honesty in business and government, democracy thriving. But what he sees around him and boldly proceeds to nail to the wall are corruption, greed, bigotry, arrogance and worst of all, stupidity run rampant:

...[I]f you live in a country where forty-four million can't read-and perhaps close to another two hundred million can read but usually don't-well, friends, you and I are living in one very scary place. A nation that not only churns out illiterate students BUT GOES OUT OF ITS WAY TO REMAIN IGNORANT AND STUPID is a nation that should not be running the world-at least not until a majority of its citizens can locate Kosovo (or any other country it has bombed) on the map.

How appropriate, then, that such a country is led by George W. Bush! In a chapter titled "Dear George", Moore lays his opinion of Bush on the line with an open letter: "Please don't take this as prying or moralizing. It is simply an honest attempt at intervention....I would like you to give me, and the American people, three honest answers." This is followed by three blunt questions, with a supporting rationale for each one:

1. George, are you able to read and write on an adult ?....
2. Are you an alchoholic, and if so, how is this affecting your performance as Commander-in-Chief?....
3. Are you a felon?

Small wonder that Moore's publisher nearly shredded his book. Scheduled for release on October 2, 2001, it was put on hold while Moore and HarperCollins attempted to negotiate new terms following the events of September 11th. At first, they agreed new material was necessary, then hit a roadblock when HarperCollins decided large sections of the original book were too politically offensive and Moore balked at rewriting them. Two months later, after Moore read from his book at a private function, telling his audience: "It may be the only time it's ever heard by anybody," a librarian who had been in attendance posted the story on the Internet. ("Librarians see themselves as guardians of the First Amendment," Moore has said. "You got a thousand Mother Joneses at the barricades! I love the librarians, and I am grateful for them!") Finally, in March of 2002, HarperCollins issued the book as is. Though virtually ignored by the mainstream media, by April 15th it was in its fourth week at the top of the New York Times' best-seller list, into its 19th printing, #1 on best-seller lists in Canada, Britain and Ireland, and the excitement continues to date.
So what, exactly, is the secret of Stupid White Men's resounding success? Frankly, it's a terrific read. The subjects it tackles, other than the personal foibles of George W.. Bush, include:
- How Bush became "The Thief-in-Chief" while receiving 539,898 votes less than Al Gore
- The myth that black people are the ones to fear ("No, my friends, it's always the white guy")
- The decline of public education, corporate infiltration of America's schools and-worth the price of the book alone-Moore's description of his own school career
- The environment and other disasters
- Why men are finished, unless........
- "The country everyone loves to hate"
- The so-called "justice" system
- Democrats as Republican wannabes
- A prayer "to afflict the comfortable"
- The Ralph Nader factor.

Some details of Moore's research may be open to criticism but the importance of his material, which he treats with boundless energy, awesome fearlessness and bouts of hilarity, cannot be denied. Positive suggestions for remedial action are featured in each chapter, and notes and sources are supplied. Here are Moore's closing words:

I want us all to face our fears and stop behaving like our goal in life is to merely survive. "Surviving" is for wimps and game show contestants....You are not stranded. You own the store. The bad guys are just a bunch of silly, stupid white men. And there's a helluva lot more of us than there are of them. Use your power.
You deserve better.

Readers who wish they knew what Moore might have written about the events of "9/11" and since, may visit his website at www.michaelmoore.com. There they'll find a free chapter addition to Stupid White Men and an invitation to "join the forum," with its over 250,000 messages. In today's uncertain world, one thing at least seems sure: Michael Moore is one very intelligent white man who will never just take the money and run.

2.0étoiles sur 5 A Pre-9/11 View of the State of the Nation, Sep 12 2006
After 9/11 happened, I didn't have the stomach to read (or listen to) Stupid White Men. With the fifth anniversary of 9/11 arriving today, I thought it was time to look back at how we looked before we were attacked. I have great respect for Michael Moore and had high hopes for the book.

Alas, I was very disappointed.

The book opens on its high point -- Mr. Moore's excellent characterization of how the first W. Bush "election" was stolen. In the recounting of the "accomplishments" of the administration, you'll be fascinated to know that many of the areas where spending is through the roof now were originally cut back . . . such as areas related to national security.

After that, the only other good section was the one about how racism is based on false beliefs about African Americans rather than personal experience.

For the rest of the book, Mr. Moore indulges in creating "solutions" that have a surface validity for someone who doesn't know anything about what he's describing. If it were just humor, I would laugh. But the "solutions" seem to be seriously intended. For instance, the Middle East will become peaceful if Arabs learn to emulate Gandhi and use non-violent protest methods. Really? I wonder if he even knew that there are two groups of Muslims that are routinely waging war on one another.

In other places, I think he was trying to be humorous . . . but it didn't work well enough to be funny. For instance, the book "humorously" describes the solution for creating peace in Northern Ireland as having all of the Protestants convert to Catholicism. It just didn't seem funny.

Mr. Moore also prefers to look at every issue from an economic class point of view. I felt like I was listening to neo-Marxism in places!

Unless you don't know how the first W. Bush election was "liberated" in Florida by Jeb Bush and his compadres, you can skip this book. You'll think more highly of Mr. Moore if you do.

1.0étoiles sur 5 The worst experience of my life, Aoû 10 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Stupid White Men (Paperback)
Just because Michael Moore says something you want to hear, doesn't make what he says the truth. This book was simply the worst written peice of paper binding I have ever had the displeasure to read. Constant, and endless, rantings, with no references to challenge or question his sources. This book is filled with half truths, misinterpretations, and flat out lies. I found myself feeling incredibly bad for George W. Bush, and I'm not even a supporter of the man!

He portrays a hero of the people, traveling around the world saying how crappy the USA is, all the while accumulating a massive wealth that rivals the down trodden he claims to be helping. I'm surprised people don't consider that if he has been caught lying and mis interpreting the truth on some issues he raises, he might (and probably is) lying about almost everything else. One should consider him as a whole package, not just an image you might think he represents because of what he "says". Sadly, if your already having anti-american sentiment, than the chances of seeing Michael Moore in the light just won't appeal to you, but consider this, what good is the truth if the one telling it has been lying and manipulating the public in telling it. He's lied on more than one occassion, just look at the fictitious statistics he pumps out, so he can do it again. Don't be duped by someone who can't and won't have the gutts to back up his information with hard based facts. If you have something published, and present it as fact, you should also have the nerve to publish endnotes and resources to back up your claims. Michael Moore doesn't do this because he doesn't want anyone challening his findings. Please don't accept everything you read from Michael Moore. It's like reading Adolf Hitler's Mein Kempfth and assuming the author was a well rounded individual.

There are better and more reliable sources on american policies and history. Michael Moore is not an expert, and shouldn't be considered as such. Please don't waste your time with this reading which claims to be a book.
