Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Sushi For Beginners has all the right ingredients for a thirtysomething novel. The thirtysomething girls are there, looking for a better job, a better man, ANYTHING other than what they've already got; there are men to die for and men you wish would drop dead, preferably in agony. And these "so-real you can pinch 'em" people live their lives in a funny, thrilling, sad world that you wish hadn't just ended when you turn the last page. But there is more, because this one is written by best-selling Irish author Marian Keyes.

Where her previous best-seller, Last Chance Saloon, featured Irish folk living in London, Sushi For Beginners is set in Keyes' hometown, Dublin. The only "foreigner" here is Lisa from London, a real madam whose longed-for promotion to Manhattan magazine is knocked off-course a few thousand miles when she is forced to accept the editorship of Colleen, a new magazine for young women, billed by the publishers as "dumbed-down" but definitely "sexy". Lisa would frankly rather eat one of her freebie Patrick Cox stilettos. Still a job is a job, and anyhow, Irish MD Jack Devine could just turn out to be a major consolation prize. Lisa's deputy at Colleen is Ashling, a Little Miss Fix-It, whose early role reversal with her mother (thanks to the latter's nervous breakdown) has induced an organisational paranoia and a handbag filled with emergency equipment to meet any eventuality. Oh, and a best friend whose motives might not always be in Ashling's best interests.

This is a story of three girls' lives, what's made them what they are and their search for happiness--sometimes found in unlikely places and sometimes lost forever. With Sushi For Beginners, Keyes is fast becoming the undisputed Queen of her genre. She is wincingly accurate and wickedly funny, and while she can tackle big issues like homelessness (no pun intended) with honest feeling devoid of over-sentimentality, her insight into the aspirations of thirtysomething women at the turn of the 21st century sets her high above the competition. --Carey Green This review refers to the hardcover edition of this title. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

For Ashling Kennedy, the new job she lands at start-up Irish fashion magazine Colleen is a dream come true. For Lisa Edwards, a high-maintenance London editor expecting a promotion to New York, her appointment as editor-in-chief of Colleen is a slap in the face, the only consolation being her rumpled-but-handsome new boss, Jack Devine. Furious at being passed up for a job at Manhattan magazine, Lisa vows to make Colleen the envy of the fashion industry, even if it kills her. She drives her Dublin staff to exhaustion, and Colleen becomes a smashing success. But after a particularly lusty meeting with her much-maligned long-distance London boyfriend, she wonders if the move and the single-minded career obsession have been worth it. Meanwhile, Ashling is betrayed by her boyfriend and her best friend Clodagh, whose bourgeois domesticity she's long envied. Ashling realizes that she has to let go of her cheerful "Miss Fix-It" demeanor and go after what she wants. Lisa is chagrined and Ashling is shocked to learn that Jack may actually fancy Ashling, but one "sushi for beginners" dinner has her convinced. British bestseller Keyes's latest confection (after Watermelon) makes such a painfully brittle start the reader nearly despairs of the cardboard cutout characters, but slowly they begin to breathe and morph into charmers. Keyes's considerable following on these shores will declare this a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy!, Jun 22 2003
By Amy Leemon (North Fond du Lac, WI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sushi for Beginners (Hardcover)
Instead of the coveted transfer to a glamorous New York magazine, Lisa Edwards finds herself the new editor of "Colleen" in Ireland, of all places! No more perks or parties. This is not good!

Ashling Kennedy is very glad to have her new job as Lisa's assistant even tho Lisa is the boss from Hell. Ashling is a "people pleaser" - even going so far as carrying a purse filled with things people may need -bandages,, pins, buttons, etc. If there's an emergency, she's ready for it. Her own life could use a little fixing up but with her new job and a new boyfriend, maybe it'll be okay.

A side story concerns Ashling's friend Clodagh - a stay at home mom with some extremely annoying children.

As the book goes along, the three stories converge and it becomes very hard to put the book down. I didn't.

If you remember her last book "Angels", she gets one more dig in at California.

Enjoy!

This review is from: Sushi For Beginners (Paperback)
This books was the first of Keyes's novels that I read and I've read many more since; however, this one always sticks out in my mind as the best. It definitely got me hooked, Keyes can't write them fast enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and well written, Feb 7 2005
This review is from: Sushi For Beginners (Paperback)
I was able to read through this book without putting it down at any point. I felt it was a tiny bit slow at the beginning, but it quickly picked up. The author did a good job of really satisfying readers needs for hero's, as well as the bad guys. A great read for any women with any interest. My current reading list is as follows, and all of it is good:

Bark of the Dogwood
Lovely Bones--Seabold
Children's Corner--McCrae
Heart is a Lonely Hunter--McCullers

If you're looking for interesting reads, these books will do nicely.
