Product Description

For generations, privileged young men have attended St. Oswald's Grammar School for Boys, groomed for success by the likes of Roy Straitley, the eccentric Classics teacher who has been a fixture there for more than thirty years. This year, however, the wind of unwelcome change is blowing, and Straitley is finally, reluctantly, contemplating retirement. As the new term gets under way, a number of incidents befall students and faculty alike, beginning as small annoyances but soon escalating in both number and consequence. St. Oswald's is unraveling, and only Straitley stands in the way of its ruin. But he faces a formidable opponent with a bitter grudge and a master strategy that has been meticulously planned to the final, deadly move.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something Slightly Different from Joanne Harris, Jun 4 2009
By dlb (Lloydminster AB) - See all my reviews
Fans of Joanne Harris might find this book to be a bit of a departure. There is no food, no wine, and no magic to be found here. Rather, "Gentlemen and Players" is a tightly crafted psychological thriller with a carefully drawn cast of characters. The most sympathetic of these is Mr. Straitley, a middle-aged Latin master in a British boys school. Considered hopelessly out-of-date by the school's administration, he deals with their petty persecutions while continuing to teach "his boys" with strictness, insight, and genuine affection. Gradually he becomes aware that someone in the staff is working to undermine the school. His struggle with the evil from within is classic Joanne Harris. Masterfully suspenseful with a great surprise finish, this chess game is well worth following.
