From AudioFile

From THE BAD BEGINNING to The End, Lemony Snicket has consistently suggested that we avoid the saga of the unbelievably unhappy and unfortunate lives of the Baudelaire children. His deliciously downbeat introduction is full of dire warnings that ensure that children, attracted to things they are warned against, will tune in. The incomparable Tim Curry resumes his role as narrator of this gothic serial. His matter-of-fact delivery lends credibility to the unbelievable assortment of disasters that befall the Baudelaires. His transition from narrator to character is seamless, breathing life into each person. Musical interludes, provided by the Gothic Archies, enhance the atmosphere. But don't expect answers to all your questions, for The End of the Baudelaires' story is simply the beginning of another's! From Booklist

After a singularly bad beginning, the Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, have finally reached the end.The question is, will Book the Thirteenth in A Series of Unfortunate Events meet the expectations of the series' myriad fans? Snicket might put it a somewhat different way: if end simply means to cease, the answer is yes. If, however, end means to complete, the answer is most assuredly no--because though Snicket neatly clips numerous threads in the tragic saga, he leaves others literally fluttering in the breeze. As with the previous books, this one begins where its predecessor left off, with the orphans and the villainous Count Olaf afloat on dangerous open seas. When a storm blows their craft ashore, kindly islanders welcome the orphans, but Olaf is an outcast. Have the children finally found the longed-for "last safe place on earth?" Not so fast . . . before long, they are once again scrambling to avert disaster and death ("Kikbucit," as Sunny puts it when a couple of characters are terminated). If possible, this title is even more preposterous than others in the series (the children help an old friend give birth), as well as considerably longer than some. But frequent references to the other adventures will send Snicket fans back to previous books to delight once again in the idiosyncratic characters, the wry humor, and the wordplay, which has surely increased their vocabulary tenfold. (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
With heavy heart I turned the page
That brought me to The End
After so long it feels as though
I've just lost a close friend

I've read the books from one to End
And shared with them their sorrow
The Baudelaires are moving on
To face a new tomorrow

Adrift at sea upon a bed
They're sharing with a foe
Hotel Denouement's far behind
With many miles to go

At last they reach a coastal shelf
And wade towards the shore
A girl named Friday helps them out
But there's much more in store

They meet the leader, dressed in white
Named Ishmael, call me "Ish"
Who offers them fermented drinks,
With raw seaweed and fish

The commune runs just like a cult
With Ish making the rules
He tells them not to rock the boat
But Baudelaires aren't fools

There's something wrong over the brae
And then to make things worse
Kit Snicket floats in on the tide
To lengthen this long verse

Back comes Olaf, and a snake
And Olaf's in disguise
The poison in his helmet bump
Can kill them all like flies

To cut things short, the Baudelaires
Go off to find the root
Of all that ails the island folk
And VFD to boot

The problem with this thirteenth tale
Is that it's lacking closure
You're not much wiser than you were
Before this last exposure

What was it in the sugar bowl?
And what's the Question Mark?
Are the Quagmires still alive?
He leaves us in the dark

Adult fans are sure to love
The characters on the isle
Plucked from famous classic tales
And sure to raise a smile

This is the most exciting one
And though it ties few ends
A villain finds love in his heart
And tries to make amends

3.0étoiles sur 5 not that good, Avril 9 2007
I liked some of it so i gave it three stars. I hated it towards the end because it seemed that the authour was in a hurry to finish it because he filled two pages or so about what happened to Count Olaf and the Baudelaire Orphans.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Each End is Bad..., Oct. 27 2006

Without giving too much away, much of this final novel deals with death and rebirth, and dealing with the 'unknown', although I'm sure that many readers are probably very disappointed with so many questions unanswered about the Baudelaire children... Would that justify adding a few more books to the series? I certainly hope so. It really was touching seeing this series come to an end. Anyone who read each book of this series, as I did, will probably understand why I became melancholic after turning the last page of this book. One great thing in the series is seeing how the Baudelaires grew, changed, and matured. In the first book, they could barely take care of themselves, by the end of 'The End', they're trying to save the world (or what they can save of it). As for the melancholy, maybe it is just time to move to other series. One new series that caught my attention is 'Why Some Cats are Rascals'. It is supposed to be made of 9 books. So far I've read Book 1 and Book 2, and I am definitely going to follow Rascal's adventures in Book 3.

Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code, what do all of these books have in common? They are all great reads unlike Lemony Snicket's The End. Read more
