Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Bradford weighs in with a maudlin saga about a woman's struggle to go on after a devastating tragedy. Her narrator, New York wife and mother Mallory Keswick, feels she is showered with blessings, but just as the family is making plans to go to London for Christmas, her husband, twin children and dog are murdered in an attempted carjacking. Depressed and contemplating suicide, Mal flees to London, where she slowly learns to accept her losses. Returning to the States, she turns the family's Connecticut weekend retreat into a successful business venture and eventually meets a man who is able to breach her emotional barricades. Spanning five years and two continents, Bradford's chronicle offers several affecting passages--but when Mal continues to mention the loss of her dog in the same tragic litany as her husband and children, credibility evaporates. Monotonous inventory listings of the trappings of material success slow the narrative momentum, as does the author's flat prose and tin-ear dialogue, especially ludicrous since Mal is supposedly a Radcliffe graduate. Nor does Bradford reach beyond her tried and true romantic formula for greater complexity--or even to tie up some potentially intriguing plot lines that mysteriously evaporate after they are introduced. 3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the author's other books, but still not good!, Mar 28 2007
I give this book 3 stars because it is a LITTLE better than Barbara Taylor Bradford's two other books I read ("Angel" and another one about a woman called Nicky Wells - I don't remember the title).

At first, I liked this book - yes, Mallory's marital bliss is a bit overdone, but as another reviewer points out, the story needs a build-up to the tragedy . And Mallory's life's perfectness is somewhat "mitigated" by the fact that she has got a difficult relationship with her mother.

The book has its moments - I like most of the characters. Mallory's grief is very well described, I like her attitude towards animals (quite different from Nicky Wells who delights in bullfighting - unbelievable that this was written by the same author!) - Mallory teaches her children to respect every living creature, she realizes that she has been unjust towards her mother - yes, she is a likeable young woman, and I found myself loving her children, they are charming and funny. Good idea that Mallory has got a nice mother-in-law, far from cliché. And I like Sarah, Mallory's best friend. By the way, I can understand that Mallory mourns her dog, too!

I was relieved when the four killers got a life sentence - in MY home country a fourteen-year-old, even if he is a killer, wouldn't be sent to prison at all.

But there is a lot to criticize.

1. I was a bit confused when Mallory was thinking about a third child all the time - I half expected that she would find herself pregnant after her family's death, but she doesn't.

2. Mallory, who has been a housewife, becomes a successful business woman and career lady in no time, that's not at all realistic! And Mallory's quick recovery from her is far from believable!

3. It's really pathetic that Andrew and Mallory don't manage to explain their children the facts of life - the poor twins depend on their schoolmate's dubious knowledge.

4. At the end, I got angry when Mallory says "Andre wouldn't want me to stay alone". A widow who's found a new love should admit that SHE wants a new relationship - she shouldn't "blame" her dead husband who - how convenient! - can't object any more!

1.0 out of 5 stars My first Barbara Taylor Bradford Book and my last., Nov 22 2003
By A Customer
This was my first Barbara Taylor Bradford Book and it will be my my last.

What an absolutely boring book! My grandmother could tell a better story than this. What was Harper Collins thinking about when they published this book? This book was made into a Movie? Good Grief!

5.0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING TO GAIN, Nov 11 2003
By Diane White, author of BEACH WALKS (Hilton Head, SC United States) - See all my reviews
From a Mothers point of view this story was a heartbreaking time in the life of someone who had so much going for her. The realism displayed during the grief, depression and months of trying to go on could only be written by someone who was close to the trials Mal went through. I don't think I'll ever forget the song that still rings in my mind that was part of the story. I felt the closure came when the children and her husband appeared in her dream and she was finally able to bury the ashes. I thought this was a good book and movie!
