Product Description

From Booklist

What is it about Fitzwilliam Darcy? Two hundred years after he captivated Elizabeth Bennett, readers still can't seem to get their fill of him. This title is just the latest in Darcy-inspired Jane Austen "fanfiction." Aylmer adheres more closely to the original in Darcy's Story, which retells Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's point of view. Big chunks of dialogue are lifted straight from Austen, accompanied by Darcy's own thoughts and perceptions. It's an interesting idea, but Aylmer's reverence for the text stands in the way of creating a lively story. There is no attempt to match Austen's sparkle or to flesh out the period setting, and opportunities to create more drama are missed; for example, Wickham's attempted abduction of Georgiana, which in another writer's hands might be a novel in itself, is dealt with in a few matter-of-fact sentences. As a result, this Darcy seems a dull dog. Nevertheless, the book should appeal to ardent Austen fans, especially if they object to too much tinkering. Mary Ellen Quinn

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, Jun 12 2008
I picked this book up very reluctantly, though it was recommended to me, because we all know how many horrible books like these there are. People try to make money off the success of Jane Austen's books, but the results are usually only a good option if you want to totally ruin your enjoyment of the original.

This book however, is not like that. It's actually really good! The writing flowed nicely, and if not quite as intricate as Jane Austen's, it wasn't annoying or stilted like I worried it might be. Darcy came off as extremely likeable and I felt like I was reading Pride and Prejudice, just more of it, like the deleted scenes or something.

If you're bored of P&P this is not the book, because it's the same thing just in Darcy's head. But if you want more more more, this is the perfect book! Well-written and enjoyable, and best of all, not absolutely horrible!

3.0 out of 5 stars its just a guess, May 12 2008
By Taren (Saskatchewan, Canada) - See all my reviews
I don't know. It's a good story, I agree it is fun for an austen fan to think about what exactly was going through Darcy's mind throughout the story and at times I became rather fond of what this author thought Darcy was thinking. BUt at other times I thought that the author conviently skims moments of importance, moments where her creation of darcy contradicts with Miss Austen's. And this frustrated me a bit. But overall, a fun read.

1.0 out of 5 stars very uninteresting, Feb 25 2008

This book lacks creativity. I could not get exited about the story. I had to stop reading it. It adds nothing to the story on the contrary it dulls it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Jane Austen would love it
I just finished Darcy's Story and loved it. Janet Aylmer shows a whole next side of Darcy, sensitive, insecure, but absolutely misunderstood at first by Elizabeth Bennet. Read more
