I agree with the previous reviewer that there were simply way too many competing storylines/charaters in this book. As a result, Poppy's and Fletch's story felt disjointed and uneven. A real shame as both characters are likeable. In addition, the timeline of the story is over 9 months in which weeks and months would pass by unobserved with no word as to what the characters were doing. I believe that the author was trying to span the time period from April (when the duel which closed out the first DD book took place) to Xmax (the main characters favorite day). Unfortunately, the leaps in time proved momentum-breaking for me. I could go on about other unsatisfying elements in the book - the direction of Villier's storyline as well as that of Jemma and Elija, but, suffice it to say, I remain a fan of the DD series despite the uneven second book. The third book is on my bookshelf and I'm hoping that it's a return to form for Mrs. James who, in my opinion, is one of the best romance authors out there.

While this book is the second in the Desperate Duchesses series, it reads more like the first. It introduces the characters and relationships which, I suspect, will be the focus of the later books in the series. Unfortunately, this is the main problem with the book: there are too many characters and relationships introduced, leading to a dilution in the main plotline. In fact, by the end of the book, I didn't really care what happened to Poppy and Fletcher and became very interested in the other characters. But An Affair Before Christmas is a very good set-up for the later books which I will probably read.
