From Publishers Weekly

Last seen in Dietrich's Napoleon's Pyramids, fleeing the forces of evil in a runaway hot-air balloon over Egypt, Ethan Gage undergoes further life-threatening adventures in this rollicking sequel. Nine months before the balloon incident, Gage arrived in the Holy Land with his benefactor, Napoleon Bonaparte. After various misunderstandings involving the secrets of the Great Pyramid, Bonaparte became his implacable enemy. Now, accused of treason by Napoleon's minions, Pierre Najac and Najac's boss, the French-Italian count and sorcerer Alessandro Silano, Gage flees to Jerusalem, where he searches for his former lover, Astiza, who he fears has fallen into Silano's hands. Gage is also hunting clues that may lead him to the fabled Book of Toth, an ancient tome that promises to reveal the secrets of the universe. Ever the incorrigible gambler and all-around scamp, Gage makes an irresistible antihero. The ending promises more volumes in what one hopes will be a long series. 8-city author tour. (Apr.)

Product Description

Surviving murderous thieves, a nerve-racking sea voyage, and the deadly sands of Egypt with Napoleon's army, American adventurer Ethan Gage solved a five-thousand-year-old riddle with the help of a mysterious medallion. But the danger is only beginning. . . .

Gage finds himself hurled into the Holy Land in dogged pursuit of an ancient Egyptian scroll imbued with magic, even as Bonaparte launches his 1799 invasion of Israel, which will climax at the epic siege of Acre. Pursuing Napoleon to France, where the general hopes ancient secrets will catapult him to power, the wily and inventive Gage faces old enemies with unlikely new friends, and must use wit, humor, derring-do, and an archaeological key to prevent dark powers from seizing control of the world.

Entertaining and vividly evocative, The Rosetta Key is William Dietrich at his fast-paced, cliff-hanger best. For lovers of stirring historical adventure laden with intriguing mystery and puzzles galore, The Rosetta Key is a terrific thrill ride not to be missed.

5.0étoiles sur 5 An absolute winner!, Aoû 12 2008
I loved this book. Great adventure woven from history, think Indiana Jones in the Napoleonic Wars! This latest book takes place almost entirely in Egypt in the year 1799 and Napoleon is in the midst of his invasion of Israel. Ethan Gage is our hero and is in and out of trouble so fast and often it is hard to keep up with his sometimes hilarious and always stunning escapes. Here we have a classical treasure hunt in the deserts of Egypt. The book is historically very accurate, and the treasure may indeed exist as has been rumoured for centuries. Our protagonist finds himself switching sides through no fault of his own and with no political intention, constantly. The only political agenda of his is to find the object of his search and protect it or destroy it to keep it from the wrong hands while trying to find out what happened to his lost love Astiza. Other than the fact he is always avoiding execution, Evan is forever finding the girl, losing the girl, and finding the girl again. Since Evan is also a gambler, perhaps the saying is true, lucky at cards, unlucky at love! I enjoy a book that is not only a great adventure and/or mystery but gives me extras, such as the historical bits and pieces I learned. A previous book, Napoleons Pyramids, sets the background for this book. I would not hesitate recommending this book to anyone. It would be of interest to readers of several genres. It has everything in it, an absolute winner!

This review is from: The Rosetta Key (Hardcover)
In the Rosetta Key, Ethan Gage, the likeable rascal first introduced in last year's Napoleon's Pyramids, continues his quest that began when he won a mysterious medallion in a card game. The medallion led him to Egypt where he attached himself to a group of savants in Napoleon's entourage, who was then conquering bits of Asia, and at war with just about everyone else.

When we last left Ethan he was escaping from Egypt in a flying balloon, the fate of his ladylove unknown. The adventure continues as Ethan arrives in Jerusalem still on the trail of the elusive treasure, and relentlessly hunted throughout. Ethan inventively weasels out of many scrapes with more lives than a cat, making friends and enemies in equal numbers.

The Rosetta Key is a fitting sequel to Napoleon's Pyramids. William Dietrich has written a highly readable and well-researched book that is sure to appeal to fans of authors James Rollins, Clive Cussler and the puzzle solving treasure-hunting premise of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. The characters are remarkably colorful; especially Dietrich's take on existing historical personages, namely Napoleon, and his many faceted character strengths and flaws. His depictions narrated by the slightly immoral Ethan, allow the reader a chance to empathize with heroes and villains alike. Despite the horror and violence of the period vividly described, the interspersed comedic relief makes it an enjoyable read and thus highly recommended for both male and female readers.
