Product Description

New York Times bestselling author Laura Lippman has been hailed as one of the best crime fiction writers in America today, winning virtually every major award in the genre. The author of the enormously popular series featuring Baltimore P.I. Tess Monaghan as well as three critically lauded stand-alone novels, Lippman now turns her attention to short stories—and reveals another level of mastery.

Lippman sets many of the stories in this sterling anthology, Hardly Knew Her, in familiar territory: her beloved Baltimore, from downtown to its affluent suburbs, where successful businessmen go to shocking lengths to protect what they have or ruthlessly expand their holdings, while dissatisfied wives find murderous ways to escape their lives. But Lippman is also unafraid to travel—to New Orleans, to an unnamed southwestern city, and even to Dublin, the backdrop for the lethal clash of two not-so-innocents abroad. Tess Monaghan is here, in two stories and a profile, aligning herself with various underdogs. And in her extraordinary, never-before-published novella, Scratch a Woman, Lippman takes us deep into the private world of a high-priced call girl/madam and devoted soccer mom, exploring the mystery of what may, in fact, be written in the blood.

Each of these ingenious tales is a gem—sometimes poignant, sometimes humorous, always filled with delightfully unanticipated twists and reversals. For people who have yet to read Lippman, get ready to experience the spellbinding power of "one of today's most pleasing storytellers, hailed for her keen psychological insights and her compelling characterizations," (San Diego Union-Tribune), who has "invigorated the crime fiction arena with smart, innovative, and exciting work" (George Pelecanos). As for longtime devotees of her multiple award-winning novels, you'll discover that you hardly know her.

About the Author

Laura Lippman grew up in Baltimore and returned to her hometown in 1989 to work as a journalist. After writing seven books while still a full-time reporter, she left the Baltimore Sun to focus on fiction. The author of multiple New York Times bestsellers including What the Dead Know and Life Sentences, she has won numerous awards for her work, including the Edgar, Quill, Anthony, Nero Wolfe, Agatha, Gumshoe, Shamus, Barry, and Macavity.

4.0étoiles sur 5 FIRST COLLECTION FROM A TOPNOTCH WRITER, Oct. 17 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)

Legions of Lippman aficionados eagerly await her next book, hopefully another adventure in the never-dull-life of Baltimore P.I. Tess Monaghan. For diehard Tess fans there is some of Tess in Hardly Knew Her, plus a great deal more in Lippman's first short story collection. Readers will find a diverse cast of characters, all skillfully drawn.

In an appreciative forward fellow author George Pelecanos writes, "With each year, and each book, Laura Lippman's work has gotten deeper, more intricate, and more ambitious. This collection makes a strong case for her range and talent."

What a collection it is - 17 stories in all and each revelatory, strongly character driven, and compelling. Don't ask me to pick a favorite because it's not possible. But, I can come up with a pet character - Mona, and she's a doozie as described in Femme Fatale. A 68-year-old doozie at that. She was a stunner at twenty, gorgeous at thirty, well, you know what the years can do. She's a widow now, not an impecunious one as her fourth husband, Hal Wickham, left her an estate valued at two million. However, that amount still does not allow her to live in the style she prefers. So, there she is at LeisureWorld.

Fellow residents consider her shy, which is not at all the case. It's simply that Mona doesn't really care for people unless, of course, they're male and future husband material. Alas, she knows a husband's not easy to find when you're 68. However, things begin to look up one day as she's sitting in the Starbucks at Leisure world Plaza. She approached by a man. Granted, his trenchcoat was stained as was his black turtleneck sweater. But, he was a man, Byron White, who told Mona he found her beautiful and he had a proposition for her. What's a girl gonna' do?

Lippman changes scenes as adroitly as she switches characters in each of her stories, the first written in 2001. Her explorations of the human heart and psyche are both moving and surprising, proving once again what a really first-rate writer she is.

4.0étoiles sur 5 I Love Lippman, Aoû 20 2008

Add this one to your 'coming soon' list!Hardly Knew Her will be released by Harper Collins Canada on September 24th.

I'm a diehard fan of Laura Lippman and her Baltimore P.I. Tess Monaghan series. This collection displays a completely fresh and different side of Lippman's writing.

The stories are divided into three parts - Girls Gone Wild, Other Cities, Not My Own and My Baby Walks the Streets of Baltimore.

The first story is 'The Crack Cocaine Diet'. Two suburban girls decide that cocaine would be the best method to lose weight quickly. It starts off rather funny but where this story goes is completely unexpected.

'One True Love' is the story of a Heloise, a suburban prostitute who will do anything to keep her private and public life separated. Heloise and her sister Meghan are the subjects of the novella at the end of the book. I was captured by the character of Heloise and privately hope she pops up in future novels. I think we haven't even begun to see what she and her sister are capable of.

There are stories featuring Tess. The best is an interview of Tess Monaghan by Laura Lippman for the Baltimore Beacon-Light. Tantalizing snippets of information about Tess's life are sprinkled throughout.

Pony Girl is a truly frightening story. This story takes place in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. A young man decides he should keep his eye on two young women so they don't get hurt. What he ends up seeing....well I don't want to spoil the ending.

Oh and the one about senior citizen porn......and what to do with that cheating husband?

Lippman has written in many different voices - old, young and yes a few male protagonists- and characters as well as new locales.

Each story 'hooked' me. I never knew what to expect - each story was a guess as to where Lippman was going to go with it. All are wonderfully different but all showcase Lippman's marvelous talent as a writer. If you haven't read Lippman yet, this would be a great place to start.
