Product Description

When high school teacher Caelum Quirk and his wife, Maureen, move to Littleton, Colorado, they both get jobs at Columbine High School. In April 1999, while Caelum is away, Maureen finds herself in the library at Columbine, cowering in a cabinet and expecting to be killed. Miraculously, she survives. But when Caelum and Maureen flee to an illusion of safety on the Quirk family's Connecticut farm, they discover that the effects of chaos are not easily put right.

While Maureen fights to regain her sanity, Caelum discovers five generations' worth of diaries, letters, and newspaper clippings in his family's house. As unimaginable secrets emerge, Caelum grapples with the past and struggles to fashion a future from the ashes of tragedy. His quest for meaning is at once mythic and contemporary, personal and quintessentially American.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gifted Writer, Nov 29 2008
By MacFly (Regina, Saskatchewan) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
The new book by Wally Lamb, The Hour I First Believed, is a tremendous book. It starts first with its size - over 700 pages - and then with the depth of the story found between its covers. It begins with a husband and wife who have "survived" the shootings at Columbine. But the story then proceeds to be more much that just their reaction to the terrible day in 1999. The depth and detail taken with all the characters is a testament to the writing ability of Lamb. The story spans generations and the reader becomes genuinely invested in so many of them. This was a hard book to put down. I have loved every Wally Lamb that I have read - this is the third - and I hope he has many more to write in the future.

1.0 out of 5 stars not impressed, Jan 10 2009
I just could not get into this book. I did not like any of the characters and that may be the reason. I read his previous book "I know this much is true" and I really liked it. I know it is getting great reviews but we all have different tastes....hope his next one is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Third Novel, April 17 2009
By Donald Reid (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read Wally Lamb's first two books, I was originally disappointed to learn that his new novel was centred around the Columbine shootings. As a teacher I had no interest in re-visiting that horrible event nor did I want to see dredged up in print stories that the families of the victim's would much prefer to be laid to rest. However, being the consummate story teller that Lamb is I was not disappointed. He tells a compelling tale of a survivor of the shooting through the eyes of her husband, and outlines the difficulties of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder not only on the victim but of the victim's family. Even more so, Lamb chronicles PTSD as it affected victim's and their families through generations of American history. "The Hour I First Believed" uses both triumph and tragedy and humour and pain to weave its tale. Lamb has the amazing capacity to become the voice of his character. Much like "She's Come Undone" which I swore must have been written by a woman; he makes his characters so believable that you feel their pain and applaud their milestones. "The Hour I First Believed" is another storytelling milestone for Wally Lamb.

An enjoyable book, but frustrating at times. He ignores the principle that "The story comes first," and puts in lots of things that don't belong. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Self-indulgence undermines
This novel is bloated and far too long for what it accomplishes. Also, it feels the need to link itself to all sorts of disasters by tenuous means. Read more
