This is a study of Victorian England and the limits society placed on women. Trollope looks at how Victorian society treated women of different classes and how some of these women found ways of circumventing the boundaries to which they were chained. It is difficult to imagine how men could have such an attitude towards women but the laws of the time (enacted by men, of course) and the norms of society worked together to severely limit what women could do. They were expected to be wives and mothers and not much else.
This is a well researched book that documents examples of women who broke the mold and expanded their horizons in spite of the odds. Trollope describes the lives of women not only in England, but also those who moved to Australia, Canada and South Africa. I learned a lot about Victorian society that I did not know. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the period or in women's rights. Be prepared to be indignant and maybe even furious at how pig-headed men of the period were.
