Product Description

From Library Journal

Nigel Anthony's reading sets this recording of five short mysteries by Rendell (The Veiled One, Audio Reviews, LJ 5/1/96) above others in the genre. Chief inspector Wexford and inspector Burden investigate poisonings, baby-swapping, theft, and forgery in "Means of Evil," "Old Wives Tales," "Ginger and the Kingsmarkham Chalk Circle," "Achilles Heel," and "When the Wedding Was Over." The venues vary in these classic English mysteries from Kingsmarkham to the south of France and California, but the characters, for the most part, lack development. Puzzle-solving listeners may enjoy these short, flat pieces, but they are not the best examples of an Edgar Award-winning author. Recommended only where Rendell is popular.?Sandy Glover, West Linn P.L., Ore.

Review

Rendell has quite simply transformed the genre of crime writing. She displays her peerless skill in blending the mundane, commonplace aspects of life with the potent murky impulses of desire and greed, obsession and fear Sunday Times The most brilliant mystery novelist of our time Patricia Cornwell Probably the greatest living crime writer in the world Ian Rankin Through the quality of her writing she's raised the game of the crime novel in this country Peter James One of the best novelists writing today P.D. James Rendell's mesmerising capacity to shock, chill and disturb is unmatched The Times [Wexford] has become an old friend who gets better with age Herald
