Anna Eastwood is the prototypical working-class girl with soap opera daydreams. In the London office where she works she meets Roger Cruikshank, a charmingly unconventional dreamer and would-be writer. Loving Roger is Anna's big mistake: though she loves him with a passion, dreaming of marrying him and living happily ever after, Roger feels passion for Anna but no love. While Roger is working temporarily in America, Anna bears their child.
