Independent Amy Lovell can't quite fit into the upper English class. She gets involved with political realities of the early 1930's and becomes a nurse, falls in love with Nick Pentry who comes from a small mining village. She's the "rock" for her abused sister, her misunderstood brother, and her flamboyant mother. You'll find her at lavish parties, feeling a need to be elsewhere. Her love abounds even though compounded by different backgrounds. The novel involves the posh and the poor, with amazing characters that won't let you put this book down. Your admiration grows for this spirited girl.
If you've loved Penny Vincenzi books, you'll love this one!
