Gedge is usually a good writer. Her other novels (I've read 4 of them) are good. What I don't understand about The Twelfth Transforming is that if she decided to write a book about historical persons, why did she pick the most unlikely theories Egyptologists ever came up with? She is bold for writing about incest, which really occurred in the royal houses of Ancient Egypt, but here it seems like a desperate effort to keep her novel interesting. Also, it can be felt clearly that she has no sympathy for any of the people she's writing about, and so she can't make us like them, which makes me wonder: why did she write a book about people she doesn't like?

Pick another Gedge book they are better than this. Or if you want to read a book about the Amarna period, try Mika Waltari's Sinuhe or the online roleplay novels at panhistoria.com (at least until I haven't finished mine :)
