Product Description

Eugene wants to get on in the world. So he has come to Paris, where the streets teem with chancers, criminals and social climbers - and everyone is out for what they can get. When he finds a place to stay at a shabby boarding house, he sees a potential plan to make a fortune: the two beautiful, aristocratic women who mysteriously come at night to visit the lonely old lodger Goriot. Could they bring him the status and acceptance he craves? In the city nothing is as it seems though. Soon Eugene gets out of his depth in a world of greed and obsession that he could never have imagined. One that can only end in terrible tragedy.

About the Author

The son of a civil servant, Honore de Balzac was born in 1799 in Tours, France. Balzac turned exclusively to fiction at the age of thirty and went on to write a large number of novels and short stories set amid turbulent nineteenth-century France. He entitled his collective works The Human Comedy. Along with Victor Hugo and Dumas pere and fils, Balzac was one of the pillars of French romantic literature. He died in 1850, shortly after his marriage to the Polish countess Evelina Hanska, his lover of eighteen years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic but not gripping!, May 30 2006
By Frank Rayal (Toronto, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Balzac takes up the topics of love and money in this novel and successfully provides detailed insights into 19th century Parisian society. It is a very neat story, yet, I found that my interest level ebbed and flowed through the story and, therefore, the three stars rating.

This was my first Balzac novel and it definitely got me hooked on the Comedie Humaine!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, Feb 21 2003
Superb. My first try at Balzac and I'll definitely be reading more. He makes you want to reach into the book and strangle those two horrible daughters.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one...
There's a good reason that this is commonly used as an introduction to Balzac: it's one of his best and most focused works (not that I've read them all, of course...). Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a chore, often a joy
This was a book that I had to study for my course, and so I approached it with suspicion. However, the characters are fabulously sculpted and the book grabs your attention. Read more
