Product Description

From Booklist

Lord Asheye, the Badger Lord of Salamandastron envisions his own demise, prompting him to send a clever haremaid from the Long Patrol on a quest to find his successor. Meanwhile, Gorath, an orphaned warrior badger, has a vision of his own: a sword-wielding mouse tells him to follow a thief to Redwall. Complicating matters are Vizka Longtooth and his scurrilous Sea Raiders who want to capture Redwall for themselves. Readers won't want to miss this installment in the Redwall Chronicles, which, as usual, is filled with colorful characters and high adventure. Weisman, Kay --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Lord Asheye of Salamandastron, now old and blind, has a prophecy: a new Badger Lord must take his place and reign over the legendary badger fortress. But who is this young warrior who 'shuns both armour and sword'? And how is he to be found? Mad Maudie, a feisty haremaid of the Long Patrol, is just the one to do the job. Meanwhile, the unsuspecting future Badger Lord has been captured by an unscrupulous group of Sea Raiders led by the infamous fox, Vizka Longtooth, intent on conquering Redwall Abbey. It is up to our young badger hero to defend Redwall so that he may fulfill his destiny as leader of Salamandastron.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow! A step up from the last three..., Oct 25 2007
This review is from: Eulalia! (Hardcover)
For those Redwall fans who were disappointed in the last three books (Loamhedge, Rakkety Tam, and High Rhulain), this book is certainly a fufillment of hopes! A few things that bothered me about the last books, and what improves in Eulalia:

1) Jacques seemed to have given up having a funny, "main" hare in his books. Earlier ones include Basil, Boorab, Clecky, Scarum, Tarquin, Dotti, and many more. In these last few books, he started to resort to groups of the Long Patrol, who stayed in the background and never had a big part. Now the old theme is back, with Maudie more than filling the place. So that is exitement number one :D

2) Readers may have noticed in the last few books that rather "cheesy" plots were taking the place of the older, simpler ones. (I mean, contrast this: A big, savage wolverine on a quest to recover a precious turtle; And a worried father at Redwall setting out on a quest to find his daughter. Big difference!) Now there is another simple plot in the old style, with a haremaid sent to find a badger lord. I enjoy that a LOT more.

3) The names seem to be getting back to normal ;D Maudie and Rangval are much preferable to Brooky and Doogy Plumm, in my opinion.

I gave this book four stars because a few things did bother me about it. One of them is that I don't like that the books are now being written in chronological order. When you know that a new Redwall book is about all new characters, it's not as exiting than if Jacques was still moving around in time. I mean, how exiting it would be if he went back and wrote a book set when Salamandastron was young, and still a volcano! Or set in the time when Mattimeo was Warrior of Redwall. Or maybe about Taggerung's son. Or something like that. And though I like the Maudies and Meheras almost as much as the Cornflowers and Columbines, they can never quite replace them. And since the books are no longer moving about in time, it dosn't look like they'll be coming back. *sigh* I'll just have to go get Redwall and Mossflower off my shelf and read them again :D The other thing is that this book is a bit slow at the beginning. But NOT as slow as the beginning of Redwall is!

So, I'm satisfied!
