Sharon Shinn is one of my favourite authors, and General Winstons Daughter is another book that shows me why, with strong, likeable characters, fantastic worldbuilding (though this is not really a fantasythere is no magic, simply a world with different countries and cultures, but deliberately like ours), and a bit of romance.

Averie is the eighteen-year-old daughter of General Winston. She is accompanying him and her fianc�, Morgan, after her countrys military has taken over the land of Chiarrin. Averie quickly falls in love with the land of Chairrin and begins to question her place in society, her engagement to Morgan (as she finds herself falling for a new friend), and the morality of her own lifestyle.

I loved Averie and her friends, and the way each character had pieces of goodness and darkness to them. Shinn splendidly balances Averies naivet� and intelligence so that she is utterly believable, and handles the romantic relationships with gracewhen Averie must choose between two young men, I felt sympathy for all parties. The ending was bittersweet and perfect.

This is very much a coming of age story, though I honestly didn't realize it was intended for young adults until I saw the classification here on Amazon. This is another strength of the book-Shinn never talks down to the reader, and I can imagine a reader of any age enjoying this.
