He is the author of seven novels and two collections of short stories, which have been published around the world and translated into more than two dozen languages. His most recent novels are Armadillo, Brazzaville Beach, which won the James Tait Memorial Prize and the McVitie Award, and The Blue Afternoon, which won the 1993 Sunday Express Book of the Year Award. He is married and lives in London, England.
