About the Author

Guy Gavriel Kay is the author of nine novels: The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, and The Darkest Road (which comprise The Fionavar Tapestry); Tigana; A Song for Arbonne; The Lions of Al-Rassan; Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors (which comprise The Sarantine Mosaic); and, most recently The Last Light of the Sun. He is also the author of the acclaimed collection of poetry Beyond This Dark House. His work has been translated into twenty-one languages. He has twice won the Aurora Award, is a three-time World Fantasy Award nominee, and is the recipient of the International Goliardos Award for his contributions to the literature of the fantastic. Guy Gavriel Kay lives in Toronto.

Today is Monday, I just bought Lord of Emperors Saturday afternoon, and I only have 50 pages to go...I couldn't put it down not knowing where I was to be taken next, the suspense is killing me, I can't wait to get home! I think we'll have take out for dinner because this book must be finished for me to get on with my own life rather than the lives so masterfully created by the author.

For any who have read The Fionavar Tapestry the first and second volumes of The Sarantine Mosaic are a must. I lived Fionavar and now I live Sarantine. There are few fantasy authors who can immerse me completely in the world of their creation. Guy Gavriel Kay is one such author, he truly is one of the finest fantasy novelists of the day and this second installment manages, miraculously, to improve on the first! If you want well developed characters and constant challenges to your expectations of formulated fantasy novels I cannot recommend this book enough!

Reading the second volume I found myself saying "Of course...how obvious" but unlike in most novels where this happens at the outset of the plot's development here I was saying it after the development was well underway, much like the characters in the novel! This is the true beauty of the work. Mr Kay has artfully written about the paradox of human experience; our humanity is really so simple and easy to understand, the emotions and the motivations, yet despite this simplicity life is very complicated because we are constantly forced to act based on assumptions about the humanity of others which can only be modeled upon our understanding of ourselves.

Guy Gavriel Kay again proves himself a master of words in this, the conclusion to the Sarantine Mosaic duology.

Everyone will grant that Kay has a passion for writing complex, imaginative, and intelligent characters. The challenge, though, is to keep these complex, imaginative, and intelligent characters from becoming overly stylized - set pieces, as it were. Kay has no trouble here keeping the action moving and the dialogue brilliant.

We are reintroduced to characters from the last novel; Crispin, Kasia, Scortius, and of course Valerius and Alixana. Making their first appearance, however, are a Bassanid doctor, his wives, a most extraordinary little boy, and of all things a kitchen undercook. This writer masterfully blends these myriad different lives together into a rich, rewarding, and satisfying novel that will keep you up way past bedtime.
