Esther Bolick, mayor of Karon's beloved make-believe Mitford, bakes a marmalade cake for Christmas that is as sweet as her hometown. Her story, Esther's Gift, and The Mitford Snowmen--"both included in this holiday collection--are previously published, stocking stuffer--sized narratives that Karon's fans have mostly likely already consumed with zeal, but the title novel is fresh entertainment that Mitford aficionados can enjoy while they do their own holiday baking. Sounding like Santa himself might, reader McDonough rumbles out these cheery tales, using dramatic pauses, lilting character voices and, at times, simple a cappella renditions of hymns to convey the upbeat innocence of the town and its residents. Choir music by Journey of the Soul fills the gaps between the novel and short stories, soaring as high as listeners' emotions will when Father Tim presents a restored nativity scene to his wife, Cynthia, on Christmas Eve. Though this audio production may be too cloying for some listeners, others will be buoyed by McDonough's jovial narration and the novel's inspirational themes.

John McDonough reads this endearing holiday tale, along with two bonus Christmas stories. After narrating several audiobooks in the Mitford series, he has grown into the role. McDonough's deep, gentle voice matches the simple lifestyles of Karon's characters. He gives a natural voice to the town's residents and charms with his vocal characterizations. The listener feels Mule Skinner's discomfort at abandoning a cozy diner and the tender emotions of Father Tim. McDonough endears himself to the reader with his portrayal of the elderly, ill, and impoverished Uncle Billy. As the mountain man frets over the "Santy" he must provide for his schizophrenic wife, McDonough's depiction resonates with the Christmas spirit. I loved Shepherds Abiding, just as I have loved all of the Mitford novels. They're so sweet and refreshing. If you're into sex and violence, you probably won't like the Mitford novels. But if you would like a relaxing little trip to a town kind of like Mayberry, you'll love Mitford. I recommend reading them all IN ORDER. I'll be sad when Jan Karon writes the last one.

I've been a Jan Karon fan since the beginning and enjoyed most of her books, but find the early editions much more entertaining and inspiring. I love the characters, but wished there could be more insights, a broadening of their character. I find the new Dosetville series by Katherine Valentine much richer fare.

LOVED this book and am currently reading the Mitford series and would highly recommend it, living in the south this book reminds of the little towns that we drive through and the people in the book are very down to earth but not without there problems so they are easy to relate to and father Tim is very human and east to relate to, it makes you realize that the clergy are just as human as we are.
