From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- Three friends, a newly discovered cave that is possibly haunted, a faithful dog, a contest reward, and bullies are the elements of this suspenseful page-turner. Other qualities such as the banter that masks the boys' affection for each other and for Bluedog; the spooky mood that fits the story, but that does not manipulate readers into feeling gratuitous fear; and the hint of fantasy, raise the book above formula fiction and round the story into a satisfying whole. Resolution of the protagonist's family problems (his mother's illness and his father's withdrawal) is credible, and only partially begun at story's end. Add respect for native American culture and delicate evocation of the 1950s setting, and the result is a memorable novel of adventure. --Holly Sanhuber, Muskego Public Library, WI
