Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Archer (Kane and Abel) pays homage to Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo in this delicious updating of the adventure classic. Four upper-crust friends from Cambridge University known as the Musketeers conspire to frame Danny Cartwright, an illiterate London East Ender, for the murder of Danny's oldest friend and brother-in-law to be, Bernie Wilson. The outcome of the intriguing trial, which pits a relatively novice defense lawyer against a skilled prosecutor, is a 22-year sentence for Danny. In maximum-security Belmarsh prison, Danny is lucky enough to share a cell with Sir Nicholas Moncrieff, the book's Abbé Faria figure, who teaches him to read and write. In a trick familiar to those who know their Dumas, Danny escapes by impersonating Moncrieff and hatches an intricate scheme to punish the Musketeers and clear his name. While Archer doesn't explore the cost to Danny's soul his revenge exacts, the author's firsthand knowledge of prison life and legal maneuvers helps make this a thoroughly enjoyable entertainment. 250,000-copy printing; author tour. From AudioFile

After his friend is killed in a fight outside a pub, Danny Cartwright is sent to prison for the murder on the testimony of the real killer. Danny's quest for revenge will hold few surprises for anyone familiar with THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. But Jeffrey Archer has fun with his revenge tale and even puts his real-life prison stint (for perjury and perverting justice) to use in his descriptions of life behind bars. Roger Allam's narration will make listeners want to keep going without a break. Allam builds tension in the clockwork plot while creating memorable characters with a mix of upper-class and lower-class accents. Even those who know what's coming will enjoy this sharp thriller. 5.0 out of 5 stars What a Blast, Mar 31 2009
By Toni Osborne "The Way I See It" (Montreal, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This work of fiction is undeniably one of the most engrossing, powerful and head-spinning I have read in a long time. The story flows well even though it is predictable at times. I had to ignore the improbabilities to focus on the protagonist exploits. This novel caught me from the first pages with its numerous spins and turns and its great characterization. I quickly became hooked and had trouble putting it down.

Danny Cartwright, who was about to marry his childhood sweetheart, suddenly finds himself accused, convicted and incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. After being mentored by a cell mate, Danny puts his new found knowledge to work. He cleverly escapes under the radar, amasses a huge fortune, a title and plots revenge against those who framed him.

Some reviewers refer to this as a modern version of Alexander Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo". I do not know if this was Mr Archer's intention but he surely delivered a fascinating, edge of your seat thriller. This fiction is written with revenge and justice as its major themes, it is easy to sympathize with Danny.

This novel is a blast, an experience I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, entertaining, can't put down!, Jun 21 2008

Archer comes up with another gem in A Prisoner of Birth. Showing that even in these modern times, the class system in the UK is still in effect, Archer pens a tale where a supposedly lower class person gets the best of the upper class. Apparently, this story is a retelling or re-visioning of the Dumas classic The Count of Monte Cristo, but since I've never read that one, I can't comment.

However, this story does stand on its own. The characters are complex, Archer gives just enough detail that the surprises later in the story bring you back to the events that happened. The book is engaging and intriguing and one can't put it down as you just need to know what's going to happen next The story is intricately crafted and detailed and makes a lot of sense. The prison scenes are very realistic (probably based on Archer's own experience "serving" 2 years "in Her Majesty's prisons").

If you're intrigued at all by the outline of this story but not sure you want to read or purchase this book, do. You won't be disappointed. This one could easily be made into a movie and would do well. Hey, there's an idea and hopefully it happens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jeffrey Archer at his Best!, May 12 2008
By MacFly (Regina, Saskatchewan) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
A Prisoner of Birth, the newest novel by Jeffrey Archer, is a fantastic book! In true Archer style, he lays out a compelling story that envelopes the reader from the very first pages. Framed for a crime he did not commit, Danny Cartwright is sentenced to 22 years in prison. Using his time wisely, he vows to reclaim his life and inflict revenge on those who put him in prison. The characters in this book are rich and well developed. Jeffrey Archer always has a way of surprising the reader and he does it several times - each brilliantly - in this book. I have read every novel by Archer and I feel this is one of his very best since his early days as a writer. A thick volume, this book is over 400 pages - but the time spent with every page is well worth it. While some books are lacking in the completeness of their stories, this one is a full, satisfying book. Archer is a world class author!
