In Joyce's latest de Warenne Dynasty Victorian romance (following The Perfect Bride), Ariella de Warenne is an extremely well-traveled young gentlewoman with radical thoughts and an independent lifestyle. Viscount Emilian St. Xavier is half-gypsy, and his hatred for the gadjos-non Gypsies-threatens to consume him. When his gypsy family makes camp on the de Warenne estate, Emilian discovers that his mother was killed as a result of bigotry in Scotland and vows revenge against the gadjos. Upon meeting Ariella and discovering her attraction for him, he at first thinks that, like other English gentlewomen, she only wants him for sex. When she asks for his friendship, he decides that she will make the perfect instrument of his rage-despite the honorable Englishman in him. The basic "virginity for revenge" plot is common, and while Ariella is a genuinely radical thinker, Emilian is eye-rollingly over the top- except at the very end, where he seems very much flesh and blood. This book skips ahead almost 20 years from the last de Warenne book. It focuses on a very grown up Ariella, daughter of Cliff de Warenne. Ariella is a smart and very independent women, and has no intentions of being trapped in a society marriage. She has no intentions of marriage whatsoever, until she meets Emilian St. Xavier. Emilian is part English, part gypsy, but he also just happens to be a viscount. Upon meeting Emilian Ariella becomes instantly attracted to him, she sees not only his beauty, but also his suffering. Emilian on the otherhand sees Ariella as a means at getting back at society, which has shunned his Romany people, as well as killed his mother. Emilian decides to seduce and ruin Ariella as payback for the sufferings of him and the Romany. Ariella falls in love with Emilian the moment she sets eyes on him, and therefore becomes easy pray.
Brenda Joyce is a great writer, but I found this book was not her best, and it didn't measure up to other books in the de Warenne series. The characters started to annoy me as the book progressed. Ariella, is suppose to be intellectual and indepentent, but she turns into this clingy doormat, letting Emilian walk all over her. Then there is Emilian, who is such a scoundrel, and very hard to like. Instead of feeling sympathy for his situation, I found myself shaking my head because he could be a bit over the top.
The story is a bit predictable the whole virginity for revenge scenario, but if you are a lover of the de Warenne series I would still recommend it...catching up with the de Warenne's is always fun.
