Product Description

From Amazon.com

Elizabeth Peters's unforgettable heroine Amelia Peabody makes her first appearance in this clever mystery. Amelia receives a rather large inheritance and decides to use it for travel. On her way through Rome to Egypt, she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young woman abandoned by her lover and left with no means of support. Amelia promptly takes Evelyn under her wing, insisting that the young lady accompany her to Egypt, where Amelia plans to indulge her passion for Egyptology. When Evelyn becomes the target of an aborted kidnapping and the focus of a series of suspicious accidents and mysterious visitations, Amelia becomes convinced of a plot to harm her young friend. Like any self-respecting sleuth, Amelia sets out to discover who is behind it all. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From AudioFile

This first journal of the fabulous Amelia Peabody describing her adventures in Victorian Egypt introduces the incredibly popular series. Susan O'Malley isn't Barbara Rosenblat, narrator of the series for Recorded Books--but get over it. The harumphing may not be so forceful from Radcliffe Emerson in this O'Malley reading, but the indomitable Amelia Peabody carries the listener along as easily as she carries her umbrella. Visitations of moaning mummies and other horrific occurrences befall the lovely Evelyn, the dashing Emerson brothers, and Miss Peabody herself, as they excavate together for the first time. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Jewel of a Read, Jan 2 2008
I absolutely adore this book! What a pleasure to be treated by an author who considers the reader an intelligent being; no lengthy explanations of concepts but the assumption that the reader will have enough sense to understand what is being written and if not, use the dictionary. That being said, Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first in a series of mysteries centered around Egypt's archeological excavations during the Victorian era. Our heroine is Amelia Peabody, a British spinster who decides to travel after inheriting money. On this, her first adventure, she rescues a young woman who becomes her companion. Together they travel on to Egypt where find intrigue in the guise of a walking mummy, a big of grave digging, with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. Told in a slightly humorous vein (think Victorian humor) Elizabeth Peters has won me over as an instant fan. The story is well told, there are numerous red herrings for the mystery fan to consider, and an outcome that leaves one quite satisfied.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little bit of Victorian Egypt., Jul 7 2004

(REAL NAME)
This book is our introduction to the world of Amelia Peabody and and her adventures in Egypt during the Victorian age. Ms. Peters has a fine sense of time and place, and her descriptions of Egyptian antiquities as they would have appeared in the 19th century are quite realistic and accurate. We also get to meet the irascible Amelia Peabody. She is actually very funny, and nothing more so than her frequent diatribes about the strictures placed on women at this time in history. The book does get a bit melodramatic with star-crossed lovers and threatening mummies, and the mystery is quite easy to figure out. But in spite of that, it's a pretty good read, and serves as a good introduction to Amelia's world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Put yourself in another world with Amelia Peabody, Jun 11 2004
By "lily71474" (Fort Hood, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This is the first installment of The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. This is actually my second Amelia Peabody book, I first read The Lord of the Silent. My experience with this series is limited, but I am fasinated by Egypt, and this series brings me to the Land of the Pharaohs without actually being there. Elizabeth Peters is a great writer, she can wholly involve her reader in the story, and even adds humor to it. This is a great book and I would recommend reading all of them, just like I am going to do!
