Product Description

From Library Journal

Somewhere in the world, there must be people who haven't heard about Tiger Woods, but the odds are slight. Editor Stout (Red Sox Century) notes that over 1400 stories were written about Tiger Woods before he won the Masters, his seventh major title. While Stout could have simply given us a flattering portrait, he has attempted to present the good (poise in competition), the questionable (snubbing a presidential invitation), and the not so good (tasteless jokes). Of course, even Woods's not so good really isn't all that bad. As one might expect, the anthology is heavily in debt to sportswriters (such as Charles Pierce, Gary Smith, and Frank DeFord). But Stout has gone out of his way to include commentary from Ellen Goodman and Maureen Dowd, writers not usually associated with the world of sport. Since Woods's career could easily go on for another 20, 30, 40, or more years, this might seem like a somewhat premature purchase. Given Woods's popularity, however, it is reasonable to assume that he will be a steady research topic for school students and a subject of leisure reading for their golfer parents. Recommended for general collections. Steven Silkunas, North Wales, PA

From Booklist

This collection of newspaper and magazine pieces written over the last 10 years provides a fascinating, you-are-there glimpse of Tiger Woods' remarkable accomplishments as they were reported at the time by a wide range of journalists. Beginning with a 1991 New York Times piece by Jaime Daiz ("Fore! Nicklaus Beware of Teen-Ager"), written after the 15-year-old Tiger had just won the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, and extending through Michael Wilbon's August 2001 column in the Washington Post ("Being Great Isn't Good Enough"), in which the author marvels at talk of "Tiger's slump" in a year when he won only six tournaments, these essays record not only what Woods has done over the last decade but also how sportswriters and cultural commentators have reacted to it. A fine overview of the first years of the Tiger Era. Bill Ott

4.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT COLLECTION, May 22 2003
By Bonita L. Davis (Decatur, Georgia) - See all my reviews
Da Capo Press present a collection of sports stories chronicling the career of the phenomenal "Tiger" Woods. As a player, icon and astute businessman, Tiger has captured the hearts and minds of sports writers. As much as they have written about this great champion of the links, the more he suprises them with new records. They are chasing Tiger but he is not so easily to be captured and defined in words. Thus this collection gives us an over-view of those writers fascination with their young prey as he launches his career.

Jaime Diaz's profile of Tiger in 1991 kicks off the beginning of this collection. It is significantin that it set the pattern for Tiger becoming more than just a name in the crowd who happened to be a good golfer. Diaz warns Nicklaus to watch out for a new young man is in town (Tiger was fifteen)who will surpass him.

A decade later, Michael Wilborn from the Washington Post bemoans the fact that being great isn't good enough in golf anymore. Why? The answer is simple, Tiger Woods. The young man has changed the stakes of the game to the point where being great isn't enough to win. Even in his "slump" periods, Tiger is still at his peak. He has raised the stakes and game to a much higher level that forces his opponents to play better.

The rest of the articles touch on issues about his deal with Nike, his refusal to be baited into "race" issues, his golf career at Stanford and his becoming a cultural icon. All of these articles are informative and enlightening as you see Tiger develop over the years. Truly this young man has changed the face of golf in many ways. Chasing Tiger:The Tiger Woods Reader is an essential book to have in seeing how the sports world has kept its eye on one of golf's greatest champions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent from Tee to Green, April 13 2002
By A Customer
This book surprised me. It is really, really good. I began it while waiting out the rain during the Masters and by the time I finished it I knew more about Woods than I learned from any other book. Its got the best writers (Deford, Boswell, Jenkins, Kindred etc.) doing some of their best work about probably the best golfer of our time. All the big wins and controversies of Woods' career are thoroughly covered, as is his upbringing. While there are a few other books that give you the details of Tiger's career, no other book takes you there like this one, and it's both fun and informative to read stories written about Woods before he was famous and the hype machine took over. While there are a few stories most golf fans have probably read before, like Gary Smith's, most were surprises to me, and I even enjoyed those few written by non-sportswriters. A real comprehensive collection and required reading if you consider yourself either a golf fan or a Tiger Woods fan.
