Product Description

From AudioFile

Clive Mantle's talent lends the characters of the Deepwoods distinctive vocal interpretations. As the story of Twig (who thinks he's a wood troll) unfolds, the listener is taken on a journey that is familiar, although the twists of fantasy bring new perspective to the tasks of searching for one's identity, overcoming obstacles, and struggling with enemies. Mantle's excellent and droll reading enhances the combination of description, humor, and wonderful characters. Sky Pirates, Rot Suckers, and Gross Mother are only a few of the creatures Twig meets, and young listeners who love descriptions of disgusting events such as compost dunking will thoroughly enjoy Twig's mishaps. 4.0 out of 5 stars Was great and made me hungry for more in the series!, April 24 2005
By A Customer
I got this book for my last birthday and wasn't eager to read it. Bt once I got started I loved it! Soon I had read the next three in the series. So far I have read all but "Freeglader" and "Winter Knights". However I want to read them!

I recomend The Edge Chronicals to all intermediate phantasy loving readers!

4.0 out of 5 stars In the tolkien tradition( a 25 year old reader), Jul 28 2004
By A Customer
I first read this book not knowing what to expect... I had already read a lot of fantasy and Science Fiction... and quite frankly I loved it... It is funny and witty beautifully written and illustrated I loved all of Riddell's books including a very funny parody of Lord of the Rings called "Muddle Earth"

I agree with the other critic it is not a book just for Kids. quite Frankly, I enjoy a lot of books which are considered for children and that does not bother me in the slightest!!!Some of them are even more interesting than adult books I read... Ok I am young at heart...I don't mind... This is a great series of books and I often read them... starting from this one making the journey again... I recommend these books to anybody who likes fantastic worlds...

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids, Jul 19 2002
By "rawaan" (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) - See all my reviews
I can't believe anyone else hasn't reviewed these books. I picked up Beyond the Deepwoods as a birthday present for my 12 year old brother, but then flicked through it, decided I wanted it, and read it in one night. The writing is wonderful - elegantly creepy and terribly evocative. Chris Riddell's illustrations are amongst the best I've seen, whether in black and white or in colour. I cannot rave enough about this book or the next two that I've read in the Edge Chronicles. Am on the edge of my seat waiting for The Curse of the Gloamglozer to come out.

I tend to enjoy childrens' books almost as much (often more) as adults', and these books have pride of place on my favorite bookshelf. Go read them now!
