Review

“Shimmering....[it] offers an opportunity to see this great classic afresh, to approach it not as a monument but rather as a deeply touching story about our contradictory human hearts.” —Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World

“Excellent....an extraordinary achievement....wonderfully fresh and readable....The English-speaking world is indebted to these two magnificent translators for revealing more of its hidden riches than any who have tried to translated the book before.” —Orlando Figes, New York Review of Books

“Stunning....Pevear and Volokhonsky have mastered Tolstoy's shorter lines, his elliptical impressions.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Reading the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, it is the artistry that leaps out, even on the first page.” —Wall Street Journal

“A major new translation . . . [which] brings us the palpability [of Tolstoy’s characters] as perhaps never before. . . . Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky’s new translation gives us new access to the spirit and order of the book.” —James Wood, The New Yorker

Product Description

From Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, the best-selling, award-winning translators of Anna Karenina and The Brothers Karamazov, comes a brilliant, engaging, and eminently readable translation of Leo Tolstoy’s master epic.

War and Peace centers broadly on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the best-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves behind his family to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman, who intrigues both men. As Napoleon’s army invades, Tolstoy vividly follows characters from diverse backgrounds—peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers—as they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most moving—and human—figures in world literature.

Pevear and Volokhonsky have brought us this classic novel in a translation remarkable for its fidelity to Tolstoy’s style and cadence and for its energetic, accessible prose. With stunning grace and precision, this new version of War and Peace is set to become the definitive English edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is no book like it., Dec 28 2008
By S. Holt (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is no book like it, but you have to read this translation. The most remarkable gift is that here we have a supremely talented writer who is also an advanced spiritual being. The result is a creation of characters that achieve not only powerful life experiences but also very profound spiritual experiences that are shocking in how true they are. Only a spiritual adept could know what Tolstoy knows. And here's a bonus: The book is an effortless read - a page-turner. Who would have thought? But beware the ending: I found the ending supremely frustrating, just as I found the rest of the book supremely enthralling. The story actually ends when Nikolenka awakens from the dream of his father - Prince Andrei - and declares he will do something, with an ominous reference to Mucius Scaevola burning his hand. A foreboding reference at end of Part 1 of the epilogue, and I eagerly turned the page to the final chapter to find out what happens. As I waded through Part 2 and Tolstoys philosophical reflections, I fully expected to find some resolution to these surviving characters. I was astonished as it dawned on me that the story itself had already ended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read, Aug 23 2009

This review is from: War and Peace (Paperback)
Often touted as the greatest novel ever written, its reputation over-shadows the fact that its a great read. Lots of tragedy, triumph, intrigue, romance, and adventure. The story follows the lives of five aristocratic families and so a common complaint is the difficulty telling characters apart. The Peters are used as an example but dont worry, there are only two separated by about 20 years of age. Ones the child a family going through difficult times, the other a wealthy count. The older Peter is lucky. The younger, not so much. Finding the time to read a novel this size is a legitimate complaint. I read it using three different platforms. On paper, the new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky provides a far more readable format than the tiny print of the old Penguin tome. Frederick Davidson provides a fantastic reading available through itunes. His voices for the different characters makes distinguishing between the characters much easier and provides a resonance that transferred to reading on paper. Finally, I downloaded the application onto my itouch when I was traveling because I hadnt brought the book along due to its size. This translation was definitely second rate and one I would not recommend. The best book I ever read, twice. The first time through was when I was very young and I could see the impact it had on me.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll need strong arms for this one, Jun 5 2008
By Michael Cox "Michael JS Cox" (Vancouver, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a heavy book. Not heavy in the sense of dismal and depressing, although, being a Russian novel, there are plenty of those scenes, as well as many surprisingly light, funny, and joyous scenes, but heavy heavy: maybe I should have waited for the paperback? It is a delight reading it, once you figure out where and how to balance it. I recommend one of those book frames you can get that hold the book at an angle on a desk or table.

There are two contemporary translations of this greatest of books, this one and a 2005 Penguin one by Briggs. I recommend as background reading the following article by Briggs, found in the Literary Encyclopedia, http://www.litencyc.com/php/sworks.php?rec=true&UID=8682. Briggs says that Tolstoy's wife, Sonya, was his first (and only, presumably) editor, and her contribution to the novel may be more than we'll ever know, but certainly it was she who was its first critical reader, and she is memorialized in the wonderful character named after her.

Speaking of characters, evidently there are about five hundred of them, and keeping track of their names is a mind numbing exercise in frustration, especially with the variations (nicknames, patronymic, last name, etc all interchanged throughout the novel for many of the major characters). But once you dive in, you cannot leave it. A great summer read, this is reputedly the best translation. It would be interesting (but I don't have the patience to try it) to read the third recently published translation as well, which is supposed to be "the original edition" unpublished in Tolstoy's time: http://www.amazon.ca/War-Peace-Original-Leo-Tolstoy/dp/0060798874/ref=pd_sbs_b?ie=UTF8&qid=1212690809&sr=8-1

All I know is, I'm enjoying reading it, if not holding it.
