Book Description

This is a practical, down-to-earth book geared to help people escape from the clutches of churches that abuse and manipulate.

From the Back Cover

For Someone Else If You're Concerned. For Yourself If You've Ever Wondered. You joined your church because of its intensity for God. Like no other place, it's helped you discover the meaning of obedience. Of teachableness. Of death to self. If there's one problem, it's the confusion that sometimes comes from your own carnal thinking. But God has given you leaders who can lovingly correct a doubting, independent spirit and help you choose God's best for your life.

How can you go wrong with a church like that? Easily. What you've just read actually fits the profile of many abusive churches. Twisted Scriptures reveals in depth how the Bible can be distorted in ways that rob you of the liberty Jesus died to give you. You might be shocked at what you discover.

This book uncovers the subtle but powerful techniques by which, in the name of truth, controlling leaders manipulate and intimidate countless believers. It also supplies tools for overcoming persuasive, deceptive teachings and practices.

Thousands of Christians have already moved from struggle to true freedom and hope through Twisted Scriptures. If you truly want to grow in everything God made you to be, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool!, Feb 6 2004
By A Customer
This book was recommended to me by somebody who was in the same cult that I used to be a part of, and I found it to be very helpful. Chrnaloger not only does an excellent job of putting the most misued scriptures (such as Hebrews 13:17) in the right context, it also helped me to see that there were some elements of unhealthy faith that I had held onto. Although I have already finished reading this book, I am using this book as a reference to continually study out scriptures and characteristics of destructive churches. If you only buy one book this year on spiritual abuse and dangerous Christian organizations, "Twisted Scriptures" is it!

1.0 out of 5 stars More Twisted Scriptures, Dec 27 2003
By Victoria Jacobs (Fort Covington, NY United States) - See all my reviews
Mary has done an excellent job of exposing abusive methods in
spiritual leaders of all kinds, which makes a real case for
being like the faithful Bereans of Acts 17 who checked out everything according to the Scriptures to see if these things were so....Mary would do well to continue to do the same in relation to her interpretation of the story of the rich young ruler. Jesus presented the 10 commandments not as a means of
salvation, but to make the young man realize that in his pride,
he DID not keep all the commands of the law....that's a human impossibility. Cross-reference Romans 4 - The law is given to make us say "uncle" and depend on the finished work of Christ.
Contrived obedience to the law is it's own abusive system -
The NT says that the letter of the law kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Mary should also be fair in interpreting Matt. 23:9....It
DOES say that we should call no man father....How can one be so
discerning for some denominational flaws, yet be in denial of the obvious of her own? According to Scripture, no man is to
"lord it over the flock" - 1st or 2nd Peter. A false spiritual
authority has to announce himself - typical Pharisee behavior
(see Matthew)
ANY system who doesn't use Scripture to interpret Scripture is a false one.
Mary is right in exposing Henry Blackaby's error in looking for "a word from the Lord" outside of the confines of Scripture.
Additional revelation is a big red flag..
Maybe what the market needs is a good lay book on hermaneutics! I believe God is teaching us all to rely solely on HIM and HIS WORD alone...and that is a good thing! Men and women are finite and fallible.
Mary has some great insights...Tolle Lege, but read critically!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool, Dec 19 2003
I left a cult earlier this year. At the time when I made the decision to leave, I was very confused and was having a difficult time understanding everything that was wrong, but I knew without doubt that things were not right. A friend of mine recommended this book to me. I bought it, read it and was absolutely stunned by everything I read. The contents of this book solidified my resolve to leave. Several friends later left this same spiritually abusive church after reading the same book.

I especially liked the checklists at the end of each chapter. It helped to have a visual list of how I had been deceived. When you are in a cult, the leaders are very convincing and often you find yourself thinking the way they talked. The lists were a great way to remind me that I wasn't insane. The appendices at the end of the book are also a great tool. It helps to know that others have experienced the same thing.
