The unearthing of an eighth-century bog man at a British archaeological dig is the catalyst for murder and insanity in this atmospheric horror novel. The two scientists assigned to the dig are fighting demons from their past--one, the death of his wife, causing him to walk in his sleep; the other, deeply rooted psychological problems involving sadism and torture. A series of mishaps plague the site, and when the resurrected bog man appears to roam the area at night, the workers must determine if the ensuing disappearances and disasters have a supernatural cause. Cadnum ( Nightlight , LJ 1/90) has crafted a richly textured and suitable moody study of revenge and terror that combines reality and the paranormal into a delicious blend with evocative prose and skill at maintaining tension. Recommended for popular fiction collections.
