Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Recovered from incapacitating guilt over the death of a child on his watch, Jack Taylor is released from the loony bin at the start of Shamus-winner Bruen's searing fifth book about the alcoholic Galwegian ex-cop (after 2006's The Dramatist). Jack's friend Nio "Ridge" Iomaire picks him up from the hospital and mentions the gory headlines: a pedophilic priest, Father Joyce, was beheaded. At the request of another frightened priest, Jack launches an unofficial investigation with the assistance of an eager, younger partner, Cody. All the while fighting his constant ache for a drink, the maverick PI also helps Ridge ward off a stalker. Jack is a keen and literary narrator, and Bruen's latest Irish noir makes for a kind of savage poetry, at once exhausting and exhilarating. Bruen has been a finalist for Edgar, Anthony and Barry awards. (Mar.)

From AudioFile

Gerry O'Brien lends a wonderful Irish lilt to the characters in this novel, which uses unfamiliar words like "hurley" (which I had to Google). The writing and the performing, as well as the Galway locations, will make you feel like you're slipping into a foreign culture. O'Brien performs with such tension that he makes the book feel personal. The subject matter is sensitive: A pedophile priest is murdered, and a tortured ex-cop named Jack Taylor is asked to find the killer. Even though Taylor can't forgive the priest and others for their sins, he's driven to solve the crime, no matter whom it hurts. There are no easy answers in this one, but what a ride. 5.0 out of 5 stars Raw Noir sytle with a side serving of Irish Culture, Jun 12 2009

(REAL NAME)
What a greatly drawn cantankerous main character. This guy, budding private eye that he is, never lets up on himself as a recovering alcoholic. Don't we all have issues? But here no apologies are made as her struggles to reclaim a life ofr hismelf after a stint in the asylum. He portrays Galway in a very personal way that trully does want you to go there and soak up the atmosphere. The author has you hooked to the story within the first few pages and that is a great skill. At first it could be said to be a quick summer read but there is alot more depth and intelligence there. I tended to want to savour the chapters and think about them before I moved on to the next.
