Product Description

Some people have dreams that are so magnificent that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. Francis Drake, Robert Scott, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Edmund Hilary, Neil Armstrong, and Lewis and Clark are among such individuals. But what if one man had such a dream, and once he’d fulfilled it, there was no proof that he had achieved his ambition? Jeffrey Archer’s latest book, Paths of Glory , is the story of such a man&mdash-George Mallory. Mallory once told an American reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, "because it’s there." On his third attempt in 1924, at age thirty-seven, he was last seen six hundred feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it still remains a mystery whether he ever reached the summit. But only after you’ve turned the last page of this extraordinary novel, inspired by a true story, will you be able to decide if George Mallory’s name should be added to the list of legends, in which case another name would have to be removed. Paths of Glory is truly a triumph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, July 4 2009
By Toni Osborne "The Way I See It" (Montreal, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This tale supports the theory that mountain climber George Leigh Mallory may have been the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest during his second expedition in 1924.

Written with vivid imagination, Mr Archer relates the life and some of the events surrounding this historical man. From Mallory's infancy, up to his dark experiences in the trenches of the First World War and on to those two famous expeditions which ultimately brought him to the Himalayas.

The story is very dramatic but we won't find any twists of faith as the outcome has left many unanswered questions from the start. When Mr Mallory's body was found in 1999 some facts where discovered that opened many new scenarios. The whereabouts of his climbing partner Mr Alexander Irvine is still an unsolved mystery.

This is not a conventional biography; it reads more like a movie script, broadly covering the facts, simplifying and embroidering events. It ends with a moving memorial service and a post 1924 update of family and followers.

I enjoyed "Paths of Glory" for its simplicity and its entertainment. It is a great story one hard to put down. For those wanting a more precise account of these two heroes, there are many other resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paths of Glory is glorious, Jun 24 2009

Jeffrey Archer knows how to weave a story. I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I bought my Mom a copy as I knew she would love it. Mr. Archer makes you want to meet the characters in his books, I was moved to tears at the end. There is no murders, sex or shootings, just a darn good tale told by a very good storyteller.

5.0 out of 5 stars The True Measure of the Man, April 30 2009
By Ian Gordon Malcomson (Smithers, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Sir Jeffrey's latest novel deals with one of those quintessential individuals in history who determines and actively pursues the path he or she will take to the top. The late George Mallory of early 20th century England led a life of adventure and challenge that took him to some of the highest peaks in the world. Archer, in this historical fiction, traces Mallory's uniquely stellared life from its humble beginnings in a Victorian public school to when he finally made his tragic ascent of Mt. Everest in 1924. Along the way, the reader gets glimpses of how Mallory focused on becoming the very best alpinist. The man had everything working in his favour as he dedicated his life to climbing: agility, determination, a head for heights, humility, and a winsome personality. To no one's surprise, his biggest obstacle in scaling those towering peaks was learning to work as a member of a team. Archer regales the reader with some intensive moments when Mallory, because of his great competitive verve, put his fellow climbers at risk; but there were also times when his quick-thinking wits saved the day. In having read this factually-based novel, I can easily see why many people have no problems crediting Mallory with being the first person to conquer Everest, even though he failed to come down alive. This book has all the makings of a good read because its main character(Mallory)displays incredible vitality that should carry the reader's interests right to the end. I got into it so much that I found myself wanting Mallory to be the man who led the 1924 assault on Everest and conquered its peak.
