From Publishers Weekly

In this sprawling, near-future saga of power politics and space exploration, a sequel to Flynn's well-received Firestar (1996), billionaire industrialist Mariesa van Huyten continues to battle wrongheaded government officials, well-meaning but naive liberals and shortsighted businessmen to put in place an orbital defense against potentially dangerous near-Earth asteroids. The novel features a number of interconnected subplots. In one, Mariesa must come to terms with a U.S. president who wants to co-opt her not-yet-completed space station and turn it into an illegal and top-secret weapons platform. In another, a group of colorful blue-collar characters who might easily have come out of an Allen Steele novel build Mariesa's station and live their boisterous, occasionally violent lives. In yet another, the poet Roberta Carson, once Mariesa's disciple but now her sworn enemy, schemes to bring about the industrialist's downfall, supposedly for the good of the people. In perhaps the novel's most interesting plot thread, astronaut Forrest Calhoun and his crew intercept a near-Earth asteroid in deep space and find tantalizing hints that someone or something may have been there before them. Meanwhile, Mariesa, a talented amateur astronomer, has discovered evidence that a number of near-Earth asteroids may have subtly changed orbit in recent years in ways that increase their threat to our planet. Like all middle books in a series, this one is dependent on what has come before it and, despite a slam-bang closing battle, ends with everything of importance up in the air. Still, Flynn has produced a well-written hard SF novel brimming with vivid characters, realistic scenes of life in outer space and just a touch of genuine strangeness.

From Library Journal

Mariesa van Huyten's fear for the safety of Earth triggers a crisis that plays out on the dual battlefields of the halls of corporate politics and the darkness of Low Earth Orbit. This sequel to Firestar (Tor, 1996) brings together familiar characters in a taut, suspense-filled sf novel that mixes personal drama with action-adventure and high intrigue. Flynn's excellently choreographed alternating of Earth and space scenes impels the action, while his characters provide a vivid cross-section of 21st century Earth. Highly recommended for most sf collections.

5.0étoiles sur 5 From the Winner of the FIRST Heinlein Award!, Déc 19 2003
Par GRIZZLY "Grizzly" (Yuma, Arizona United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Rogue Star (Mass Market Paperback)
As many writers that have been compared to Robert Heinlein only to fall short of The Master's works, Michael Flynn is the ONLY one to actually have the credentials to claim this exalted place in Sci-Fi, having received the FIRST Heinlein Award for writings in hard Sci-Fi, voted this new honor by a panel of judges including some of the greatest authorial names in modern Sci-Fi Literature!(See at www.heinleinsociety.org)
I recall having seen Rogue Star(along with the other tomes in the quadrilogy) on the bookstore shelves for years, and am at a loss that I waited until learning of Flynn' Award to finally try his work. As Heinlein did, and all too few have done since, Michael Flynn has written about the near future as if he had his own Time Machine and is returning with reports of what he has seen himself!
To quote Poul Anderson, legendary giant of Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre, "Firestar was a mighty hard act to follow, but Michael Flynn has done so, and brilliantly! Rogue Star continues the story, with the same imaginative realism, suspenseful narration, and vivid humanness, plus all sorts of new ideas and insights."

If you are contemplating reading this excellent quadrilogy, buy them ALL, so you don't have to wait for delivery between volumes, and be prepared to set aside any other tomes until you finish the series!

2.0étoiles sur 5 A Long Week, Oct. 31 2001
Par Un client
This review is from: Rogue Star (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked up Rogue Star at the bookstore one weekend, not knowing what it entailed. Although part of a series, Flynn does well to keep new readers in the loop about what is going on. Readers who are new to the series can dive in with this book without feeling lost. Unfortunately, I found the book lacked a great deal of intensity. There are multiple character story lines, but it is a terribly long read with not much in the way of plot development along the way. Although charcters develop over the course of the book, we're still left wondering why it takes 500 pages to get to the bulk of the plot. If you're looking for an epic and enjoy a fairly "true to life" outer space experience, this is for you. Otherwise I recommend to steer clear!

2.0étoiles sur 5 Michael Flynn needs to meet a black person, Aoû 23 2001
Par Un client
This review is from: Rogue Star (Mass Market Paperback)
Memo to Michael Flynn: When Tim Meadows would say "Word" in skits on Saturday Night Live, he was actually making fun of people who think that's actually part of black peoples' slang. It's not, it never has been and will not be in the year 2009.

I enjoyed Firestar and thought it moved at about the right pace. I am less than halfway through this sequel and dread the thought of all the time I must put in to finish it. It is padded and dull.
