From Library Journal

This is Green's second football novel, following the successful Ruffians (LJ 9/15/93). Quarterback Hunter Logan-still at the top of his profession but aging and looking for financial security-gambles on inside knowledge of a professional basketball game and falls into the clutches of mobster Tony Rizzo. Rizzo wants to take over his uncle's Mafia organization, and he figures that owning a quarterback and fixing football games is a good start. Rizzo is a loose cannon, however, and the target of an FBI investigation led by agent Ellis Cook. The FBI has a traitor, and Cook's information is being leaked to Rizzo. Cook and Logan have to work together to save Logan's family, protect the National Football League, and bring down Rizzo. There's suspense, violence, good football action, and two likable heroes here. Public libraries should buy for their sports fans.

From Kirkus Reviews

Former pro-football player Green (Ruffians, 1993) fumbles his way through a second attempt at a suspense novel. The star quarterback of last year's Super Bowlwinning New York Titans, Hunter Logan is a nice guy who can be counted on by his teammates and family. What makes this dependable, straight guy place an illegal $10,000 basketball bet is a mystery (Green is apparently trying, implausibly, to create a situation from which it seems impossible for the hero to escape), but this indiscretion is documented by mobster Tony Rizzo, who has been dating the daughter of the Titans' owner in order to gain an inside edge in gambling. Tony plans to use Hunter in a point-shaving scheme that could net the mobster millions and gain him the coveted rank of godfather, now held by his uncle, Vinny Mondolffi. Tony is closely followed by FBI agent Ellis Cook, who could have implicated the Mondolffi family in a mob murder early in the book had he not blown it by flashing his badge and making himself so conspicuous that you wonder how such a dim-witted fellow made it through FBI training camp. When Hunter is trapped by Tony's threats against his wife and child, Ellis makes contact with him. Together they plot to bring down Tony, but their progress is impeded by an agent who is so obviously a rat for the mob that he might as well have been introduced as such in his first appearance. Other would-be surprises are similarly spoiled by Green's awkward use of foreshadowing, in which future elements are indicated as if with a neon sign. This is not so much a copycat of books in this genre as it is a regurgitation of commercial movies. Except for the inside look at pre-season training and pre-game breakfasts, we've seen it all before. A poor effort with yawn-inducing results. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0étoiles sur 5 Green's best football book! A Great Fast Read!, Janv. 15 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Titans (Mass Market Paperback)
I want to start out by saying that I live in the part of Long Island where a lot of the scenes take place so for me that added to the suspense. Second, don't pay any attention to that Kirkus garbadge!! For some reason he hates Tim Green If that idiot had botherd to read the book and not just skim it he would know that it does say exactly why Logan places the bet. Third, I have read all of Tim Green's football books and this is the best one. There aren't many surprises but the mafia vs. FBI depiction is excellent. This book is great for football fans especially for New Yorkers. It has a typical Tim Green ending but it is still a great read. It really does move like a two-minute drill.

3.0étoiles sur 5 different team, different kind of corruption, Juil 9 2003
This review is from: Titans (Mass Market Paperback)
Tim Green returns with another tale of NFL corruption. This time the star player is a quarterback who has gone bad by giving into mob influence and becomes a pawn in the plot of a mob lieutenant who wants to become a heavy hitter in the big leagues. This book does a little more with developing its characters and stays true to the formula of delivering an interesting football-based scandalous plot. It delivers a good ride and a satisfying conclusion.

5.0étoiles sur 5 It's Tony Soprano on the five yard line!, Avril 25 2003
Par Blackworm (Virginia Beach, VA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Titans (Mass Market Paperback)
TITANS centers around New York Titans All-Star quarterback Hunter Logan on the event that elevated him to hero-worship: winning the Super Bowl. What his teammates and wife don't realize is that Hunter also has a slight problem. To make sure that he remains in the cash and to satisfy a urge to play chance, he makes side bets on basketball games with the help of a bookie meadiated by his friend and former teammate, Metz. Chance plays a heavier hand in Hunter's life when buddy Metz takes his latest cash bet from Hunter and places every dime on the Titans to win their latest game. The amount betted alerts Tony Rizzo, ganster and begging to be leader of his uncle's mafia family, to tail Metz and discover Hunter's involvement, then blackmail him into a points shaving racket that will involve Tony going to the owner of the Titans and exposing him to the NFL if he doesn't comply. Need more incentive, then how about killing Hunter's wife, then his daughter? What neither realizes is that Ellis Cook, FBI agent and leader of a mob task force, is trailing Tony and looking for evidence to send him to prison and close down the connecting families operating in New York. What Cook doesn't realize is that within the walls of the FBI, a traitor is spilling the developments of the impending case against Tony to his uncle, Vincent Mondolffi, one of the ruling families. The mole is easy to figure out, but the development of the story is not, and just when it looks like there is no way out, another door opens and the suspense kicks in on another level. Lengthy, yet worthy of more football-suspense stories. Good work, Mr. Green!
