Product Description

From Library Journal

Detective Marti MacAlister, of the Lincoln Prairie police department, wonders how she and her partner will find the murderer of a young woman who "fell" to her death on the rocky shores of Lake Michigan. A homeless black man has not seen his best friend in days and wonders what has happened. And a crafty stalker wonders how best to massacre Marti, her kids, and her housemates. Bland handles with ease all of these complications?including fiance, school problems, and ghost sightings?adding a credible, realistic, and entertaining volume to a successful series (Keep Still, St. Martin's, 1996).

From Kirkus Reviews

Halloween week is anything but festive for Det. Marti MacAlister and her partner Vik Jessenovik. There's the case of pregnant Ladiya Norris, who came all the way from Chicago to Lincoln Prairie to fall, or get pushed, from a bridge to the beach below. (Her unsavory married boyfriend, Barry Knox, has enough strikes against him, from drug-dealing to wife-beating, to motivate a dozen homicides.) There's the case of Dare (n George Washington Jones), missing buddy of Marti's streetcorner snitch Isaac, who's convinced that he didn't just move onhe was moved. There's the case of the pumpkin-suit flasher, a seasonal wacko who hasn't been caught in seven yearsand won't be this year unless Marti and Vik can bring themselves to team up with a pair of vice cops as lazy as they are inept. There's trouble at school with an iron-willed teacher determined to split up Marti's son Theo and her fianc Ben Walker's son Mike, even though they've gone all through school together. There's the self-lacerating search of Marti's housemate Sharon for true love, or whatever she can find instead. But the biggest threat is one Marti doesn't even know about: the stalker who's moved into her house part-time in preparation for executing her whole family. Bland's blunt honesty about her characters' conflicted emotions makes this the best of Marti's six cases (Keep Still, 1996, etc.) to date, even though individual storylines stay stubbornly distinct. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars BLIND EYES, BLIND HEART, April 12 2001
By Bonita L. Davis (Decatur, Georgia) - See all my reviews
He comes into your home, goes through your things and plots your family's death. Yet detective Marti MacAlister is totally oblivious to this evil presence in her own home. Will her blindness and that of her friend Sharon cost them their lives and that of their family?

In this sixth case of the Marti MacAlister series we find the detective consumed by the murder of a woman and the disappearance of her snitch's best friend. Marti's room mate is consumed by her inability to say no to "Mr Wonderful" thus compromising her self esteem and neglecting the children. Throw in a kid trying to become a gang member, a flasher and people who refuse to report what they see and you have quite a mess going on the job.

This is an intriguing story as we see the intertwining of Marti's personal life with that of her job. We see the budding sexuality of her daughter and the courageness of Ben, her fiance. Marti's consuming time on the job interferes with what is so plainly before her as she begins a new step in her life. Follow her along this track of evil. See if she awakes before it is too late.

5.0 out of 5 stars From The Portsmouth Herald:, May 29 1999
By A Customer
"The story is particularly engaging for its character and situations, but Bland doesn't scrimp on suspense, building through tragedy, wasted lives and hope to a breath-catching climax. A well-written standout series."
