From Publishers Weekly

Setting 18th- and 19th-century Mogul India against the open highways of contemporary America and fusing Indian myth, Hindu gods, magic and mundane reality, this intricate first novel is a magnificent epic that welds the exfoliating storytelling style of A Thousand and One Nights to modernist fictional technique. Abhay, an Indian college student studying in the U.S. but home on vacation in Bombay, shoots a scavenging monkey; the dying creature reveals itself to be the reincarnation of Sanjay Parasher, a fiery, iconoclastic 19th-century poet and freedom-fighter against British rule. To remain alive, the monkey strikes a deal with the gods: he must keep Abhay's family entertained each day by telling stories of his former lives. Around this fanciful premise, Indian novelist Chandra has built a powerful, moving saga that explores colonialism, death and suffering, ephemeral pleasure and the search for the meaning of life. Through the monkey's tales, we learn of Sanjay's lethal estrangement from his best friend, Sikander, an Anglo-Indian warrior who serves the British; of the suicide of Sikander's mother, Janvi, who throws herself on a funeral pyre after her English husband gives away their daughters to missionaries; of Sanjay's avenging showdown in London with Dr. Paul Sarthey, renowned orientalist and murderous imperialist. Abhay also narrates his own sprawling tale about his drive across the U.S. with two alienated fellow students, providing a dramatic contrast between America's throwaway pop culture and India's ancient, venerated ways, bound up with the concepts of dharma (right conduct), karma and reincarnation. This is an astonishing and brilliant debut.

From Library Journal

In this debut, an example of magical realism with an Asian American twist, a monkey shot by a young man in Bombay turns out to be the latest reincarnation of a 17th-century poet and adventurer. The gods promise to spare the monkey's life if he tells a story, and his stirring tale of warriors and poets blends with the young man's account of three college students making their way across America.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Ambition and talent in need of an editor, Juil 6 2004
Par krebsman (New York, NY United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I basically enjoyed this book, but after finishing it I slightly resented having spent so much time reading it. Like MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN, RED EARTH AND POURING RAIN is a sprawling, ambitious novel with strong exotic elements depicted in vivid prose. However, like MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN, it is also FAR too long and could have easily been pruned of at least a hundred pages. The story of Kyrie, for example, despite taking up many pages, added nothing to the main story and could easily have been dispensed with. I also think that knowledge of Indian history, Hindu mythology and the rules of cricket would be helpful to properly appreciate this book. My knowledge of these subjects is very vague, so I'm sure there's a lot I missed. There are several stories going at once and not all of them have logical ties to each other. There are a lot of loose ends. I also feel that the whole tone of the book shifted right around the time the glowing child was born. The supernatural and allegorical elements came to the forefront and the story became tedious. (A character I liked changed his personality and chopped off his own head!) What was the point of continuing reading if everything I had read before didn't matter any more? This happened at about 400 pages into the book, so I felt obligated to finish the final 142 pages. It was a chore. I hope that the author will someday revise this book and get rid of all the extraneous and inconsistent elements. There's an excellent novel buried in this stack of words somewhere. I think Chandra is talented and I look forward to reading his short stories in LOVE AND LONGING IN BOMBAY. Perhaps in the shorter form he can be a more disciplined writer.

think of it like a strikingly attention grabbing face.... trying to analyze each individual feature gets you pretty much nowhere, each has its character and they all combine to make for something rather unique.

this book's something like that - almost human in the complexity and character that it manages to pack in. full of the incredible magic that makes up life and is almost always overlooked. rich, detailed and vivid, an amazing read.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Magic Realism within an Amazing Epic, Déc 18 2002
Par "jeander" (Redmond, WA USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I love this book! It pulled me in and wouldn't let go.
The main narrative follows the story of three "brothers" in their journeys of life, where magical --and mythical-- influences abound. It begins in ancient India, and ends in modern times. The sub-story captures the malaise of a modern young adult who isn't sure where he fits in the world.

In the first reading, I got a little lost in the story within a story, within a story, within a story ....you get the idea. Stick with it -- it isn't critical to enjoyment that you keep it all straight.

Good book for those who like a little magic in their stories, who want insight into the Indian culture and perspectives, who like a rousing tale of love, longing, battles, sacrifices, and consequences of personal choices, and the possibility to do better the next time around.

I read, and then re-read this book. Enjoyed it even more the second time!
