Product Description

From Amazon.com

Twelve-year-old Nathan Bailey, accused of murdering a cop, becomes the target of a nationwide manhunt even as a vicious hit man is closing in on him. Orphaned and alone, Nathan has no one to count on but himself. To stay alive he must exercise all his agility and cleverness. And ironically, he finds his honesty is the best weapon he has as he wins the trust of a radio talk-show host and pleads his case to a rapt nation. This debut novel by John Gilstrap has created an international sensation. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Nathan Bailey, a 12-year-old boy incarcerated in a juvenile detention center on spurious charges, escapes after murdering a guard who attempted to stab him to death. A chase ensues, and along the way we are introduced to an ambitious prosecutor, some vengeful cops, a mob hit man trying to finish what the guard started, and other assorted bad guys. On the side of the young escapee is an empathetic police lieutenant who recently lost a son of the same age who bore a strong resemblance to Nathan. A charismatic shock-radio talk show hostess plays a pivotal role in influencing public opinion as well as providing a forum for Nathan's side of events. As the chase continues, the reader is forced to consider how one views the doling out of punishment, as well as judging the validity of outside influences on the rightness or wrongness of the commission of a violent crime. Gilstrap's debut work gallops along at breakneck speed to an ending that is guaranteed to evoke a strong emotional response in the reader. Highly recommended for general fiction collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky Find!, Mar 25 2004
By C. J. Collier (Allyn, WA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Found a used copy of this book in a charity shop in Inverness, Scotland. Needed an "airplane read" and this looked interesting. What a pleasant surprise! Exciting plot, true-to-life dialogue, and a 12-year-old protagonist who isn't too good to be believable. Despite the age of the main character, the language and situations make this a book NOT intended for children. However, adults who enjoy murder thrillers won't be disappointed. Excellent book, especially for a debut novel. I will definitely look up this author's other works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, Feb 15 2002
By A Customer
I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the character Nathan. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I would have liked an epilogue at the end of the story telling what ultimately happens to Nathan. Other than that I highly recommend this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Society Haters, Unite! You have a new champion., Feb 3 2002
I sincerely hope this first book is also the last one by this author. A 12-year old car thief, burglar, and (?) murderer (?) is its "hero". The author gave away his leftist leanings when he stated in the blurb that this is a book about "the war our society wages against its children".

So, don't jail them, provide them with the means to kill; whether it is with a Glock for drive-by shootings or a shank into a drunk's gut, never mind. After all, it is society that is at fault, never the non-existing parenting, or the teachers who are afraid to go to school because they will be blamed for their charges' rotten behavior, the teachers who get killed and raped by these misbegotten poor little sweethearts. Yech.... stay away from this garbage and keep your money.
