Product Description

Multiple Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge's first full-length novelAs a mud-spattered youngster, Tatja quickly realized she was different from the stone-age primitives with whom she grew up. Her insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge could not be quenched among them; she had to explore and learn more about the strange world she lived on. She finds the bastion of all culture, arts, entertainment and history for the entire planet, the seven-hundred-year-old science fiction magazine Fantasie, which is produced entirely aboard a gargantuan floating vessel the size of a small city. But despite the printing presses, sail-powered vessels, and mind-expanding technology, Tatja is still dissatisfied. Rising through the ranks, she finds that the people on the enormous barge are just as unintelligent as the primitives she grew up with. But others have come to the planet who not only challenge her intelligence, but offer her a tantalizing opportunity to uncover answers to mysteries that have long plagued her.But with opportunity comes risk. And if she acts unwisely, she could bring doom to the only world she knows. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A stranger to the very end, Jan 23 2007
By nanoJak (Canada) - See all my reviews
The story takes place in an intriguing setting in which very smart people are trying to earn their living on a planet where the industrial revolution has yet to happen. They often find themselves surrounded by more primitive cultures where people are living within the boundaries of ancient religions. Well, maybe not so ancient. The history of the world appears to go back only about a thousand years. Beyond that, nobody knows. The staff of the leading publishing company on the planet, who circle the world in a gigantic ship distributing their magazines and novels to customers along the way, meet up with Tatja Grimm, an intriguing character whose origins are concealed throughout most of the novel. Although her initial appearance leads them to believe that she is a primitive from the central parts of the continent, she is anything but. An exceedingly fast learner, she climbs to ladder to the top of any and all enterprises on which she embarks. There are reasons for her extraordinary abilities, and we learn these only slowly throughout the novel. Part one of the novel leads to the encounter between a team of editors and publishers and Tatja Grimm. Part two begins after she has gained enormous influence on the publishing ship and schemes to gather even more power. In part three of the novel, Tatja Grimm embarks on her biggest adventure yet, risking the welfare of everyone on the planet for her personal gain. Although it just may be that she is actually working for the greater good. We don't become very close to Tatja, rather we share the point of view of her closest friends and advisors. In this way, the character maintains some of her mystery until the end but for me this distance made it more difficult to really become involved in the story. It was a fun read, a fairly quick one, and while I did appreciate the characters that we do come to know fairly well, it always felt as though something was missing. But I think that's the whole point of the story, as Tatja herself doesn't quite know who she is herself even though a lack of confidence is not one of her faults.
