Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up—Jean Honeychurch is so unlucky that even her family calls her Jinx. To escape an unpleasant situation with a boy who refuses to let her end their relationship, Jinx moves from Iowa to Manhattan to live with her aunt and her family in their swanky Upper East Side townhouse. It's no surprise that the klutzy, small-town 16-year-old doesn't fit in with über-chic cousin Tory and her friends, and she definitely doesn't share their fondness for drugs and alcohol. Tory, who has been practicing witchcraft for some time, soon realizes that Jinx also has the gift and invites her cousin to join her coven. But Jinx knows the dangers of playing with magic and refuses. Tory sees Jinx's snub as a threat and plots against her. Though she wants to leave magic behind, Jinx must learn to harness the mysterious powers that are her birthright before Tory does too much damage. Cabot creates believable conflict and avoids being too fantastical, as Tory's mental instability is more dangerous than her Wiccan powers. In the vein of Avalon High (2006) and "The Mediator" series (both HarperCollins), the author delivers her signature blend of romance and wit, successfully combining upper-crust chick-lit and a tad of the supernatural into an entertaining potion that is sure to please her fans and draw in new readers.—Emily Anne Valente, New York Public Library

From AudioFile

When Jean moves from Iowa to live with family in Manhattan, she hopes the bad luck that earned her the nickname Jinx doesnt follow. Unfortunately, even if she could move on, her sophisticated but malicious cousin Tory wont let her. Both girls have magical powers, but there can only be one witch in the family. Amber Sealey develops Jinx from a nave country girl to a confident witch in this magical story. Sealey is most believable when portraying Tory as a conniving witch with a capital B. Her voices for the supporting cast of family members, the German au pair, and the cute guy Jinx and Tory fancy are equally believable in this tale of high jinks in a Manhattan high school. 4.0 out of 5 stars A really fun read, Oct 30 2009
By L. C. L. "LCL" (Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jinx (Hardcover)
I'm a fan of Meg Cabot and think this book was particularly fun. I think Cabot does a nice job of mixing fantasy elements into her books and this one was no exception. I liked the way that you didn't know everything about Jinx and her past within the first chapter, that everything wasn't exactly as it seemed at the beginning. I really liked the characters and I'd like to see more books about Jinx and her family.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jinx, Jun 28 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Jinx (Hardcover)
"I nodded. I don't think I could have spoken if I'd wanted to. Not because my cousin had just tried to kill me. But because Zach had rushed down to rescue me without remembering to put a shirt on."

This quote sums up the mood of the book, teenage girl gone crazy for good looking boy, but with a bit of witch craft thrown in. Jean also know as Jinx due to her dreadful luck is about to have her blood spilt and drank by her cousin Tory and all Jean can think about is the fact that her rescuer is not wearing a shirt.

Jean and Tory are descendents of a great-great-great-great grandmother who had been a powerful witch who was burnt at the stake. Before she died she prophesied that one of her descendants would possess the powers of a powerful witch.

Bad girl Tory wants the power to be hers, but when she realizes Jean has the power and does not want to join Tory's play coven Tory is bent on destroying Jean.

It takes an agonizingly long time to find out why Jean has come from Iowa to live with her Aunt and Uncle's family in New York, but eventually all the details are provided, though it is fairly easy to guess that Jean had cast a spell that backfired.

Younger teens will probably enjoy this book, but it definitely is cheesy in plenty of sections. Jean just cannot help gushing over good looking Zach who is Tory's next door neighbor and love interest. Zach, however, is interested in Jean and not Tory, so this creates even more conflict between Tory and Jean. In the end all is well and the good witch wins over the bad witch.
