About the Author

James Herriot grew up in Glasgow and qualified as a veterinary surgeon at Glasgow Veterinary College. Shortly afterwards he took up a position as an assistant in a North Yorkshire practice where he has remained, with the exception of his wartime service in the RAF. He is married with a son who is also a veterinary surgeon and a daughter who is a doctor.

This was also the first of the James Herriot series that I read. I was in my early teens and I fell in love with this book. It made me laugh so hard and at times made me cry my eyes out. Mr.Herriot has a wonderful style of writing that makes you want to go visit Yorkshire and meet all the people and animals that he writes about. Most of all, I really wish I could have met him in person and seen his practice up close. It is definately that kind of book. He is an amazing writer and I love all the books he has written.

It was the first James Herriot book I read, and I think the best. It was funny at times and serious at others. It introduced me to a English Countryside vet's life. Sqeamish people might want to skip over parts. (He is a vet!) But over all, I really think this book is a wonderful must read.
