Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Last seen in 2006's Crisis, New York City medical examiner Laurie Montgomery diligently investigates an abrupt rise in infection deaths at the start of bestseller Cook's lively new thriller. All the deaths can be traced to three Manhattan hospitals owned by Angels Healthcare. Unbeknownst to Montgomery, Angels, which specializes in high-profit surgeries of amply insured patients, is on the verge of going public and can't risk any bad publicity. She's also unaware that Angels' main financial backer is a local Mafia don, who's prepared to kill anyone standing in the way of his investment. Cook smoothly juggles several subplots—one involving Montgomery's husband and fellow coroner, Jack Stapleton, who's suffered a serious knee injury playing basketball—and ekes out maximum value from one of his regular standbys, bumbling hoods. It all adds up to an entertaining mix of suspense, action and education about medical issues. (Aug.)

From AudioFile

CRITICAL is Robin CookÕs latest book featuring recurring characters Laurie Montgomery and Jack Stapleton. George GuidallÕs performance is spot-on, as usual, but itÕs hard to imagine him keeping a straight face in the booth. First, thereÕs some atrocious dialogue between two violent thugs. ItÕs hard to take them seriously when they say ÒHispanicsÓ and refer to Rohypnol as Òthe date rape drug,Ó as opposed to a Òroofie.Ó Other than the silly dialogue and shallow characters, the story is engaging as it recounts LaurieÕs travails in solving a series of gruesome staff infection deaths. Still, despite GuidallÕs perfect performance, this is more of a movie of the week than a blockbuster. 4.0 out of 5 stars Robin Cook On MRSA & The Marriage Of Money & Medicine, Aug 16 2009
This review is from: Critical (Paperback)
Angels Healthcare has a group of privately owned specialty, primarily surgical hospitals in NYC. The company is about to go public and make lots of money for the executives and investors except for one catch. MRSA or methicillin resistant staph as it kills several of the patients getting surgery there threatens the financial harvest. Despite rigorous infection control practices the problems with MRSA continue. When Laurie's husband Jack (both pathologists) is about to have knee surgery in one of these hospitals, the issue comes into critical focus.
Normally hospitals take time to build up big problems with MRSA and often the tertiary care centers have the worst situations since they get the sickest patients. However, Angels Healthcare leaps right into a calamity and struggles to maintain its positive IPO outlook. Throw organized crime into this mix and the book gathers more excitement.
It is a good medical thriller, especially for those who enjoy learning about medical topics and issues. MRSA is a growing threat in and out of hospitals and definitely manages to stir up anxiety and fear, emotions that drive a good part of the plot. The Griffon Trilogy: Part I

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Cook Thriller!, Dec 7 2007
By Ian Gordon Malcomson (Smithers, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Critical (Hardcover)
In his own inimitable way, Cook has produced another blockbuster of a story that combines the challenges of running and financing a private hospital system, dealing with mob, and fighting the spread of deadly pathogens in New York City. The cast of characters range from enterprising business people to nasty mobsters to dedicated doctors to half-crazed war veterans. The plot involves the complicated intertwinings of Angela seeking to expand her private hospital chain with the launch of an IPO(initial public offering; Jack and Laurie Stapleton, as medical examiners, investigating the outbreak of a serious staph infection at Angela's hospitals; and mobsters like Franco and Carlos attempting to undermine the operations of Angel Healthcare. Cook, once again, fuses a number of stories together in a very intricate plot, where villains collide with villains and only those who are truly acting in the best interests of humanity rise above the fray. Here are a few reasons why I would recommend this book: a. Cook writes about what he personally knows -medical forensics; b. Cook writes in an easy-to-read prose; c. Cook produces a realistically compelling story that contains an element of the surprise or unexpected towards the end. For a person like myself who needs to resort to a little high-adventure/escapism, Cook's novels do it.
