'A dazzling first novel - funny, thoughtful and original' -- Stephen Fry on FATHER FRANK 'FATHER FRANK is a warm, funny, blisteringly good read that has the angels on its side' -- Tony Parsons 'A fast and entertaining read ... It all has a Richard Curtis-esque veneer ... it works because it's real' -- Sunday Express on THE MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE 'I defy the most hard-hearted cynic not to not find something just as seductive in his writing' -- Sunday Express 'A very skilful practitioner of a genre hitherto dominated by Nick Hornby and Tony Parsons ... this novel should secure his position in that particular literary gang' -- Time Out on THE MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE 'Like a gift from heaven' -- OK! on THE MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE 'Refreshing' -- Adele Parks on FATHER FRANK 'Burke moves between the two characters' points of view, bringing both a persuasive male perspective and a sympathetic feminine position ... Burke's bubbly enthusiasm for London, where the novel is set, is infectious, as is his characters' passion for food, travel and romance' -- Daily Telegraph 'Original and comedic...very cool, very pithy' -- The Express on FATHER FRANK 'Burke is very clever, a terrific find, a natural storyteller and definitely a talent to watch' -- The Bookseller on UNTORN TICKETS 'Burke's characters and their unfolding story have depth and charm' -- Hello magazine on UNTORN TICKETS 'His writing is just the right mixture of tongue-in-cheek meets heartwarming and he makes you laugh ... it works because it's real ... Product Description

This is a wonderful comic novel to appeal to all the fans of Mike Gayle and Ardol O'Hanlon. It is about a Roman Catholic priest who runs his North London parish whilst harbouring an almighty secret: he doesn't believe in God. This doesn't stop him from being hugely successful, if a little unconventional in his work. He raises money by driving a London taxi and everything is going well until Sarah hops into his cab and into his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut Novel, April 17 2003

This review is from: Father Frank (Hardcover)
I read Father Frank on the advice of a friend earlier this year. We were camping and I needed a new book to read. I was expecting a simple, funny beach read and I got that, but it is also much more than that. Francis Dempsey, a lapsed Irish Catholic, gets into Oxford to study theology and eventually becomes a priest, despite his total lack of belief in a higher power. The book, pleasant and enjoyable to read, manages to tackle subjects like faith, sex and the role of religion in every day life without preaching and author Paul Burke does a surprisingly good job of it. The seemingly silly, unbelievable plotline works brilliantly thanks to Burke's impressive comedic talent. This is a purely fun read, and one that will, amazingly enough, leave you pondering faith. Outraegeously funny, sometimes heartbreaking, 'Father Frank' should be required reading for everyone who ever questioned God, and love.
