Jean Smart was indeed the "smart" choice to narrate the latest installment in the V.I. Warshawski series. She capably presents the P.I. as an intelligent, no-nonsense character who is not afraid to stick her nose into danger to find the answer. In DEADLOCK, Warshawski investigates the death of her cousin, a former pro-hockey player of the Chicago Blackhawks, and finds herself uncovering scandal in Chicago's shipping industry. Lacing her narration with both sarcasm and tension, Smart colorfully performs V.I. and a wide array of characters-from the dock workers to the company executives. V.I. is relentless in her quest for the truth-and Smart skillfuly portrays her in its pursuit. K.M.D. (c) AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine--

Review
Praise for Fire Sale, Warshawski's latest outing -- : 'How enjoyable to settle down with a new book by Sara Paretsky.' -- Sunday Telegraph 'With the creation of V.I. Warshawski, Sara Paretsky did more than anyone to change the face of contemporary women's fiction.' -- Express on Sunday 'Warshawski's darkest outing, with no sign that her creator is flagging. Paretsky has written a novel in which a great deal is stripped bare, including Warshawski's innermost anxieties about herself, producing a narrative as gripping as it is emotionally wrenching.' -- JOAN SMITH, Sunday Times
