Product Description

"A writer good enough to restore your faith in fiction."
THE NEW YORK TIMES
It is only a week in the life of a 35-year old bachelor school teacher in a small Minnesota town. But it is an extraodinary week, filled with the poetry of living, the sweetness of expectation, and the glory of surprise that can change a life forever....
"Absolutely smashing....An altogether successful work, witty, intelligent, compassionate."
THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER

From the Publisher

Finding out that Ballantine published this book was a very nice surprise for me. I first read Jon Hassler's Staggerford when I was a sophomore or a junior in high school. I'm not totally sure which. Talking about this book with a friend was one of the first conversations I ever had when I thought, "Wow, she gets it too!" I've read just about all of his novels since. No one captures the small town subtleties - the quirks and the quiet dignity - with as much warmth as Jon Hassler. My friend eventually moved to Minneapolis and has seen the author about a dozen times. I don't think she moved to Minnesota just to stalk Mr. Hassler, but it is a nice plus for her. Working in the office, I've read his books before they've been published and seen the comments from his editor and his letters as the manuscript become a final novel. I've never actually spoken to him though which, in a way, I like. You see, I love all of his books but when I think of Jon Hassler, I picture the warm, quiet, intelligent gentleman and slightly awkward and anxious observer- that is Miles Pruitt, the hero of Staggerford. I'm sure it's not accurate - what author is just like his protagonist? - but I like thinking of him just like that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Staggering Debut, Jan 18 2003
By Anthony_C (Illinois) - See all my reviews
Jon Hassler is a supremely talented author. "Staggerford," his debut novel (originally printed in 1974), takes an altogether uninspiring plot and manages to craft the truly compelling story of Miles Pruitt, high school teacher. Hassler deftly walks the very thin line between small town caricatures and three dimensional characters with quirks and mannerisms that we are all familiar with. His narrative never falters, his pacing is impeccable, his book is a week worth remembering.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Books Not Called a Classic, Jan 2 2003
By Tiffany (Rock Falls, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
Reading this book is like settling into an old chair. Staggerford is a caricature of every rural Midwestern town. You recognize the characters, but Hassler knows them intimately.

This novel starts with the pretense of chronicling ordinary days in one seemingly average man's life. It trails along with the lulling, monotonous pace of routine. As it progresses, the reader is drawn deeper into the disappointments, regrets, and aspirations of a handful of quirky but endearing characters, all tied to the main character, Miles Pruitt.

The serene landscape and lives of Staggerford are spontaneously rocked by life's inevitable truths. Lies quickly unravel and havoc takes hold. The whole of the book's slow portrait serves to heighten the intensity of one moment. Then, just as quickly, the town settles again into the quiet passing of uneventful days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Staggerford by Jon Hassler, Mar 11 2002
By A Customer
Staggerford by Jon Hassler is about Miles, a portly middle-aged highschool teacher living in a small town. Over the course of one week, his calm, placid lifestyle is disturbed when he is blamed for a series of events and has to fix the faux pas of others. For example, he has to make peace in the "Indian Uprising" and he is said to be having a relationship with one of his students. On top of all this he has to deal with a horrible toothache and his undying love for a fellow teacher.
I liked it because of the humor and there wasn't a dull moment. Each character was colorful, no matter how long they were in a scene. I liked how there was hidden humor and it seemed to make sense until you reread it and thought about it. I recommend this book to anyone, young or old, who is looking for a book with a humorous style of writing with a serious plot.
