From Amazon.com

So you want to write a multivolume, bestselling epic fantasy? Here's the book to help you. The Rivan Codex was published to answer the many letters David and Leigh Eddings have received from students, teachers, and aspiring writers. It's a companion to the 12-book fantasy series comprised of The Belgariad (five books), The Malloreon (five books), Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. In David Eddings's words, The Rivan Codex "may give the student of our genre some insights into the creative process--something on the order of 'connect wire A to wire B. Warning! Do not connect wire A to wire C, because that will cause the whole thing to blow up in your face." This is a collection of the groundwork David and Leigh Eddings laid for the Belgariad and Malloreon series. On this firm foundation they imagined and built their world in book after book.

There's a fascinating introduction, a personal history of Belgarath the sorcerer, Holy Books, Gospels, Histories, King Anheg's diary, and an afterword. Footnotes tell how the authors used and changed these materials in writing the books. And of course, there are plenty of maps (the starting point for all epic fantasies). --Nona Vero --Ce texte provient d'une édition qui n'est plus publiée ou qui est non diponible.

From Publishers Weekly

Though full of treasures, this farewell to the world of the authors' bestselling Belgariad and Mallorean sagas is rather a mixed bag. The book contains an autobiographical foreword, explaining the roots of the double saga in David Eddings's reading of medieval epics, the editorial influence of the late Lester del Rey, the longstanding but only recently acknowledged role of the author's wife as "unindicted collaborator" and the perils of writing high fantasy in general. The volume then presents a variety of well-crafted pseudobiblia, such as Belgarath's autobiography and many of the Holy Books. It goes on to the historical, economic and ethnographic background of the major nations of the sagas. There are many other pieces that reflect well on the Eddingses' world-building skillsAas if the novels themselves had not already demonstrated their craft. This book may be unintelligible to those who are not Eddings fans, but it will be irresistible to those who are. It is also of some scholarly interest in revealing the roots of one of the founding megasagas in modern English-language fantasy. Science Fiction Book Club alternate selection.

1.0étoiles sur 5 An unfortunate case of Ego, Janv. 12 2004
Par Un client
As much as I enjoy the majority of David Eddings' story, a man who can only write one plotline with the same characters undergoing variation should not presume to tell anyone how to write a story. I am not disparaging the repeated retellings; I enjoy them (except Polgara) and I am buying the newest series in hardback. The fact of the matter is Eddings is not really an author; he's a storyteller. He's perfected one story and has become very good at retelling that one story in different ways. The fact that he presumes to laud himself and instruct others in their writing in his introduction has placed him squarely in the list of people whose product I love but would never wish to meet in person. The rest of the book is, frankly, boring. The piecemeal references to the various prophecies found in the book are more instructive, and mesh better with Eddings' own description of the personality of the Prophecy *anyway*. While not as self-indulgent as some such works can be, this book is not worth buying, unless you are trying to mine the world for fanfiction or a roleplaying game.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Excellent Final Book, Avril 21 2003

This was the perfect cap to the book series. It let you see into the mind of the author, as well as how each Kingdom and character was developed. Other than the Mallorean Gospels (which bored me to tears), I couldn't put it down! Great book!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Buy this one last...., Déc 15 2002
Par KRASSEL (SPANAWAY, WA USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I agree with some of the reviewer's in that this book should be read after reading the Belgarid/Mallorean. If you haven't been steeped in the world it relates to, the Codex will be a very slow and boring read. But if you are a Eddings fan, this book is a great addition to your library. I too, felt David Eddings frustrations come thru in some of his commentary, but unlike some I didn't take it personal. Give the guy a break. I highly reccommend this book to all the Eddings fans.
