Product Description

From Amazon.com

Sugar lurks in foods in more than 85 different forms. Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D., the first person to receive a doctorate in addictive nutrition, says that besides being detrimental to the immune system, the more than 100 pounds of processed sugar consumed annually by each American is responsible for "mood swings, depression, fatigue, fuzzy thinking, PMS, impulsivity ... [and] unpredictable temper." And while overdosing on the sweet stuff is a national pastime, she says her research shows indulging in sugar highs should be treated much more seriously, akin to heroin or alcohol dependency, because sugar causes spikes in the neurotransmitters serotonin and beta-dopamine just like those drugs--and can eventually wreak similar mayhem on one's health, work, and relationships.

The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program is not a quick fix; DesMaisons's plan aims to eliminate sugar cravings, requiring five days of "detox," along with building up the resolve to stick to the recommendations over time--including while out at restaurants, during social gatherings, and while traveling. Fortunately, she offers plenty of tips for those situations, and her prescription is practical and easy to follow, including seven steps as simple as making sure some protein is included with each meal. (That's not to say this is a high-protein, low-carb diet; she criticizes Dr. Robert Atkins and other fad-diet hawkers.) DesMaisons includes more than 50 recipes that cover breakfast through dinner; advice for choosing comfort foods to replace those M&Ms and sodas; and an invitation to join the support group she runs through her Web site. The Recovery Program should be of particular interest to parents and teachers, considering the way sugar-saturated foods are ruthlessly marketed to children--Coke machines are more and more commonplace in elementary schools--and that many of the behaviors DesMaisons links to sugar sensitivity are remarkably similar to those of ADHD. --Erica Jorgensen

From Publishers Weekly

Following in the tracks of her Potatoes Not Prozac, nutrition expert DesMaisons serves up a practical and promising dietary plan for sugar addicts, which revolves around several basic tenets: no sugar, moderate amounts of complex carbohydrates, more protein, regular meals and a nightly potato. (Eating potatoes enables tryptophan to enter the bloodstream, which increases production of the brain chemical serotonin, which, in turn, boosts optimism, creativity and the ability to concentrateAkey factors, DesMaisons avers, in maintaining a healthy diet.) Using biochemistry to alter mood and cure sugar cravings is DesMaisons's primary goal, and she maintains that the best way to redirect a sugar-sensitive makeup is to deal with the sugar addiction step by step. To that end, she offers an accessible diet that allows dairy (butter on the potato is allowed!), meat and plenty of whole grains. The book includes menus and recipes (including some creative ways to fix "Mr. Spud"), tips on what to order when dining out or when eating on the run and a list of foods containing "covert" sugar. DesMaisons guides readers graduallyAalbeit with some repetitionAthrough her plan This is a sensible approach that will surely tempt sugar lovers hoping to find a natural, long-range solution to their addiction, and ultimately change their lives. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as her book on potatoes, but okay...., Nov 6 2003
By Dianne Foster "Di" (USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
In THE SUGAR ADDICT'S TOTAL RECOVERY, Kathleen DesMaisons elaborates on material found in her earlier book POTATOES NOT PROZAC. DesMaisons is an expert on addictive nutrition. Many people who eat sugar impulsively may have an addiction problem. Sugar can be found in everything from alcohol to apples. DesMaisons earlier book discussed the science underlying her claim that the serotonin level in the brain is a major factor in depression and other disfunctional behavior. In this book, she reinforces her earlier findings and elaborates further. Her approach will appeal to those familiar with 12-step recovery programs. Additional information in SATR includes: 1) a Q&A where DesMaisons futher elaborates on eating potatoes (why it is a good idea before bedtime); 2) a small section of recipes; and, 3) an extended list of covert sugars.

DesMaisons says it's not just overt sugars that can be a problem. Covert sugars have been added to most processed foods and can be a major issue. Did you know that eating low-fat ice cream may be worse than eating regular ice cream? The lo-fat kind relies on sugar to give you the smooth texture provided by fat in the cream kind. I have found DesMaisons books very helpful because I have been following the INSULIN RESISTANCE DIET advocated by Hart and Grossman, and DesMaisons books nicely complement their work. Getting sugar consumption under control and lowering my insulin resistance has been a major factor in my improved health. I am 61, just had my physical and my sugar is perfect (from diet and exercise alone)-and I am related to dozens of diabetics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective, clear, and all-encompassing, Oct 9 2002
By Jon Torodash (Wilmington, DE USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is my favorite book on sugar sensitivity, and it's not just a book on sugar sensitivity when you think about it, but Dr. Desmaison's approach could probably be adapted to handling most any chronic health epidemic that exists. Instead of just reading these so-called experts sit on their high perch and try to back-seat drive us up to their level of "success" without really understanding that people are physiologically different, we need to understand the cause and effect of our health problems in uncomplicated language, learn the road to recovery, and then be taught how to personally tread that road. Several complications may arise for people which many experts themselves did not have, even if they were previous victims of a given illness/disorder. I've yet to see another book that actually discourages giving up an addictive activity whenever one feels able because of a possible brain chemistry imbalance. This book does not lapse into a wishy-washy self-help mess. It instead recommends a slow, steady, and painless recovery that is then based on healing the biochemistry without drugs.

The 7 step program is not arbitrary; it's tested and true, and the best part is that you aren't held to a schedule of when to follow it. It's sort of like nutritional karate - you advance to the next level when your ready for it and no sooner, because only then are you strong and well enough to take it on and get use out of it. There are no induced starvation mechanisms and no tortuous "it only takes a few days for the cravings to go away" prequisites.

The naysayers who posted bad reviews here clearly reflect a poor understanding of the program. This is NOT an Atkins diet+potatoes. Dr. Desmaisons does not even CONSIDER removing the sugar from the diet until the 6th step and even then, you've never stopped complex carbohydrates. The protein in the diet is important just for what protein does for a healthy body. There is no use of Ketosis here. And just for the sake of argument, _even if_ this were an Atkins diet + potatoes, potatoes are probably one of the worst foods you could have on the Atkins diet and would sabotage the whole process. SATRP is a book with a system that is gentle on the body by listening to its responses.

Making cracks about the term "addictive nutrition" does not change the fact that sugar sensitivity has been laid out in crystal clear biochemical terminology with a plan for recovery. This book is not meant to be a replacement for SSRI's; at best it's a way of being able to heal your body so you don't need to rely on them.

I must admit, vegans do seem to be a bit short-changed, not only in that there is not too much information specified to it, but also because this program might simply not work for many people with vegan sources of protein, most of which are not complete and not as easily assimilated by some bodies. As an ex-vegan having found this plan, I have come to realize that veganism is not all some people make it out to be. If anything, this book may even possibly be used as a case against veganism, since that dietary habit may put people at risk for sugar sensitivity into danger.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book can change your life., Mar 27 2002
By Shani Ferguson (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've read *all* the books and tried so many "diets," but never found one single program that was able to make a lasting difference in my life and weight. This book builds on the science explained in Dr. Des Maisons's first book, Potatoes Not Prozac, which helped me to understand that weight gain (and depression) WAS NOT MY FAULT, but rather a function of my sugar-sensitive biochemistry. That realization was key to 80 pounds of weightloss (and counting) and the kind of centeredness, confidence and happiness I haven't known since childhood.
