A shadow of the good novel it could have turned out to be!, Avril 21 2007
The one common theme among Julie Garwood's books is that you can expect the two major characters to end up happily together. When Jordan Buchanan was challenged by her older brother, Nick, and his partner, Noah Clayborne to live life instead of burying her nose in a book or computer, she stepped up to their challenge and into Noah's arms.
This book lacks the usual chemistry and witty conversations that Ms. Garwood's characters usually have. What was disappointing with this book was that there was more quick narration by the author than letting the characters interaction tell the story.
I've been waiting for a book to be written about Noah and was thrilled that he ended up with a Buchanan. But the characters lack development. I knew about Noah in other books he made appearances in that reading this book, which is a shame because this book is HIS story. The change in Noah from a fun-loving, carefree womanizer to a man who took his chance and slept with his partner's sister, was hastily developed and shown. His change to a one-woman man was tried to be showcased in two instances only but it was not convincing.
Jordan's point of view and character development in the story too lacked conviction and thrill usually found in other Garwood heroines. Her scenes with Noah are not romantic. And in some instances where something romantic could have happned, the scene just falls flat. Of all the Garwood heroines, she's the least romantic and thoughtful.
In this book, Ms. Garwood seemed to love the phrase: as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Unfortunately, this book seemed forced and hurried. It has got the most unromantic ending. What I find problematic in this book, and some of her previous ones, is that instance when the man proclaims his love. She always starts by "and he told her all the loving words he's been storing in his heart". I, for once, would like to actually READ those "loving words".
If I hadn't read Ms. Garwood's previous novels, I wouldn't have appreciated the little change, but change nonetheless, in Noah's character. After all the ribbing he's given to Jordan's brothers when they were falling in love, I had expected he would be on the receiving end of the ribbing. But alas...
Overall, it is a good read but nothing to match the author's previous attempts at contemporary romance/thriller. Garwood's arena is more romance than thriller and maybe she should have concentrated more on developing the romance between Noah and Jordan instead of the mystery that the characters were engulfed in. Regardless, I am hoping to read about Jordan and Noah in the author's future contemporary romance/thriller novel.
But if there were a chance that Julie Garwood could re-write this book, it would be worth a shot. Then maybe she could do justice to the characters she had fostered in previous books.

Not a very good read - Garwood has wrote better books in the past, Fév 12 2008
I discovered Julie Garwood's books years ago after I first read "The Wedding". I was hooked after the first two chapters. I've always looked forward to her historical romance novels and have enjoyed them for the good "beach reads" that they are. While none of her books that feature a modern day setting seem to match the romance and escapism of her historical novels, they haven't all been bad...until lately.
This story lacks the wit, passion and romance that most of her other books have had. There is only so much disbelief in the plot that a reader can suspend before it gets frustrating. But this isn't anything too new, the plots of Ms.Garwood's contemporary books have been uninspired for the last couple of books like Murder List and Slow Burn. If your looking for romance, read vintage Garwood like The Bride, The Secret, Ransom and, of course, The Wedding.

"For the love of... Unless you plan to get under the covers, I suggest you keep your pants on.", Sep 7 2007
This book is a romance and thriller at once. Add in some contemporary shake, and you've got Shadow Dance. I rather liked that the title is a play on Jordan's father's situation (bodyguards shadowing his every step) inadvertently happening to her when she finds the dead body of a historian she's met two days prior in the trunk of her car and her brother Nick and Noah Clayborne, two FBI agents, fly at her aid. Hence, being shadowed by bodyguards of sort. Then Nick has to leave, for matters unknown, and suddenly begins a dance of should-shouldn'ts with Noah even as they try to find the real murderer, who proves to be one heck of a surprise.
This is a great read, and I found it refreshing, witty and intelligent and less tedious than some of her previous works. The writing is fast-paced, which makes sense as this is a thriller as well, and Jordan and Noah's relationship does not bloom quite as suddenly as has been said. Re-reading through it, you'll find that Noah unknowingly had feelings WAY before they even began *cough* dancing. Anyway, hopefully we'll get to read more about Jordan and Noah and their treasure hunt!
