Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This latest in the Aurora "Roe" Teagarden series (Dead Over Heels, etc.) features the sleuthing Southern librarian in a gripping tale that explores the lengths to which people will go to obtain what they desire. Roe and her new husband, Martin, receive a surprise when Martin's niece Regina arrives on their doorstep with the new baby no one knew she was expecting. Several hours later, after a dinner party, Roe and Martin return home to discover Regina's husband, Craig, murdered in their yard, Regina missing and baby Hayden hidden under a bed. Roe, unable to have children, finds herself burdened with Hayden's care as she and Martin attempt to track down Regina after coming across a wad of money in the diaper bag. Along for the ride is Rory Brown, a friend of Craig and Regina's who is suspiciously interested in Hayden. Harris's story is fast paced and peopled with tragically frustrated characters. Roe, who understands the length to which people might go to have children of their own, is horrified at what she discovers. When Martin, Roe and Hayden arrive at Martin's little-used country house, several other characters, including neighbors Margaret and Luke Granberry, enter the tale. A murder occurs, with tragic consequences for Regina. While all the loose ends are tied up, the heartbreaking solution provides comfort for no one. Harris mixes elements of a cozy and her darker themes with skill and panache. (Sept.)

From Library Journal

Aurora Teagarden, part-time librarian and series sleuth (A Bone To Pick), has a horrible day. First, the man who delivers her firewood inexplicably dances naked in her yard. Next, her husband's niece and new baby turn up unannounced. Then, several hours later, she discovers the niece's husband dead, his parolee buddy asleep behind the couch, and the niece missing. Left holding the baby and facing the onus of a murder suspect in the family, Aurora and hubby are desperate for the truth. Live-wire action, small-town antics, unexpected plot ramifications, and a humorous tone make for fine reading. For all collections. [This is part of St. Martin's new crime imprint, MinotaurAEd.]

1.0 out of 5 stars Never Again, May 24 2003
By A Customer
Lately, I've found a certain peace in using my own, hard-earned money to make a statement. I seriously doubt that my not purchasing another movie ticket, renting another film, turning off a certain show, or choosing not to purchase a Charlaine Harris book will ever register on the scale of the people who seek customers, but it makes me feel better. Several female mystery authors have chosen the same path that Harris has with this book, and my choice is to no longer purchase their books. I turn to these books to escape real life. If they're talented story tellers and if reading their stories helps me enter another place and time for a while, I enthusiastically purchase their hardcovers and add them to my modest little library. This book, however, ensured that I won't be reading any more Harris books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Literary "bait and switch", April 25 2003
By "hr2go" (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews
I have enjoyed all of Ms. Harris' different series. Roe Teagarden was delightful because - as one character points out - she is really pretty self centered (in a nice way, can't help of root for Roe). This is yet another tight mystery that we are lead step by step to it's conclusion.

That being said, this book goes along its merry way when all of a sudden we are thrown a very dark twist at the end which is completely out of character for this series.

I certainly hope Ms. Harris does not continue this trend in her other books. I found it dissappointing and a cheap shot for dramatic appeal. I will most likely not purchase any more in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unafraid [Mild Spoilers], Feb 20 2004
By C. Hodges (Little Rock, AR United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I suspect that many of the lower-rated reviews of this book are due in large part to the surprising ending. I myself was taken aback at Ms. Harris's choice of endings, but she is entitled to props for being unafraid to shake things up.

And that's only fitting. Aurora Teagarden, after all, has evolved from a mousy librarian in Real Murders to the wiser, edgier figure she cuts in this and subsequent installments of the series. Ms. Harris's ending sets the heroine up for deeper emotional plumbing in future installments, and this book definitely marks the death of the cozier stories earlier in the series. All in all, the book remains highly enjoyable and worth seeking out.
