This could have been an original premise. Unfortunately it is not. I think the author should credit Greg Weisman's work and admit she used the Gargoyles TV show as a starting point. It would seem much more honest. Coincidences like her main character, attorney Margrit Stone (shortened to "Grit" in true anti-Sue fashion) even shares the same ethnic/racial background as Gargoyles character Eliza Maza. So many ideas are recycled that the story and plot will feel familiar to long ago viewers of the show.

What the author adds is a decidedly romance tinged perspective that the Buena Vista show (wisely) kept in the background. It is awkward at times yet interesting (ie: curious) at others. Unfortunately, I didn't find the romance to be all that well written either. The book starts with the guy already having a crush on the girl. Indeed, it is arguable that the author herself is crushing on her protagonist, because she keeps adding details to the characterization that hit us over the head with just how feisty Margrit is, how selfless, etc.

The romantic conflict is there, but sadly unemotional. We logically understand that Margrit would first be afraid (for all of the 30 seconds that she actually is) of a suspected murderer and then of someone who keeps reminding her he's not human. But it falls flat, perhaps because Margrit is portrayed as this tough as nails, scared of nothing person, logical person. These are all good, but fail to show her vulnerability.

Plotwise, this book revolves on the necessity for Margrit to catch a serial killer, and of course to discover the extent of Alban's involvement. The author throws a few red herrings but the meandering pace (sometimes very quick, sometimes very slow) and different characters don't serve it well. It could be a little tighter. I'm sure no one will buy into most of the red herrings (at least two of those are kept as loose ends at the end, for an obvious sequel setting effort). The final twist was unexpected but was very disappointing considering it was not preceded by any clues at all, and also because the repercussions are cut way too short giving the previous developments almost no impact.

Anyway, this book wants to establish an urban fantasy setting and makes steps in this direction, but spends too much time deciding how far to take the romance and not enough world building and serving its plot.
