5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Enjoyable novel I have ever read!!!, Jul 19 2004
By A Customer
At the age of 18 in 1963 while my husband and I were stationed in Chambley France (USAF) I discovered this wonderful political novel, almost by accident. Later, and with great anticipation, I read the follow ups all the way to The Promise of Joy. Later in life, I managed to obtain all 6 of this series (hardback of course, because I knew that they would be used over and over) for my personal library and as of today have re-read them several times (each time, enjoying them even more). Back in '63 I never thought that America could really become what Mr Duruy was writing about, cause after all we all love our country Right?? Well, as the years have passed, I do see exacally what he meant. There really are a great many Americans that would do harm to her. Although these may be novels, I do believe that there is a lot to lean about the workings of our govenment. Although I have read several reviews of the series, I disagree with most and advise you to read them ALL!! Each one deals with different area of the government and are well worth the read.. As I travel to Washington D.C. for the first time next month, I have a burning desire to see our National history and it great part it stems from reading and enjoying to the fullest these great works of a brilliant mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent political fiction book, Jun 16 2004

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
One of the more enduring books of American literature, Advise and Consent appears to withstand the test of time. Well written, very gripping and a real page turner, it was no surprised that many people even today, would pick up this book to read. There was a movie based on this book which was also pretty good.

This is however a first book in a series although it can be a stand alone book. I would probably recommended that since the series can be somewhat of a let down after a such a fine novel. Technically speaking, the series that follows Advise and Consent branched off to two separate direction. One direction leads the United States into ruins while other direction leads the United States into victory and renewal over our enemies. The situation can get pretty soap opera-like and after you are done, it also felt bit dated.

Thus, I would recommended that you stick with this book alone and forget the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars POLITICS AS THEATRE, Jun 6 2004
Based on a great novel by Allen Drury, "Advise and Consent" was a 1950s film that holds up today as one of the best political movies ever. It revolves around the nomination of Henry Fonda to be Secretary of State. The fictional account portrays Fonda, based on Alger Hiss, and his nomination raises a huge hullabaloo. In Hollywood's perfect world, Hiss/Fonda is not convicted, and a bungling Burgess Meredith plays the Whittaker Chambers character. Instead of using his Christian resolve to uncover the Truth via his "pumpkin papers," he is discredited as a liar. It also offers an insidious plot to blackmail a bi-curious Republican Senator. It is good stuff, but definitely political revisionism.
